  • Heli Deviant seeks reasurrance!

As a deviant tail-flyer, can anyone tell me what happens if I buddy-up with a straight nose-flyer?

Seriously... I'm struggling to man-up to the nose-in hover. Whenever I think about trying it outside the sim, I see a vision of wreckage on the ground at my feet... with little pound-signs raining down onto it.

I could use some buddy time but I'm not sure whether my predilections disqualify me from polite society?

    Any insights?

    Tail Pride,
    Rich

Can you do figure of eights with the crossover section coming nose in at you. Work on that two mistakes high then slow it down until you end up in a nose in hover. If you can do it confidently/competently on the sim you can do it out. Man up, crashes happen.

        Just do it high up.

If you are comfortable with pyros, start by doing one or two, then hesitate half way round, gradually increasing the time that you are pausing nose in. If you can do it on the sim, you will already have the muscle memory and this hesitating pyroing technique will help build the confidence.

Once you can do it at height by doing that, bring it down gradually.

Other people find it easier to take off nose in. It is different for different people.

I've never thought it was a good idea using buddy leads, especially with helicopters for a few reasons, first if anything happens its usually too quick to do anything about, second it encourages you to just mess about and not use it to learn what you should be learning, third its also unreliable, though this is rare, some radios just dont play well together...

Once upon a time, a heli responded to both sets on the deck and hovered fine, but when it came time to take over when needed, upon releasing the trainer switch the heli instantly went full nose down and crashed, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks heaps guys. Plenty of good advice for me to chomp on. I'll definitely try out the excercises you suggested.

Of course you are right too, in the end I'll have to suck that lemon and hope for the best. I had wondered whether a single supervised session might get me over the hump but deep down, I guess I knew it was a bottle-job. I know it's just nerves and I'm sure that my thumbs really do know what they're s'posed to do, it's my dumb head that's getting in the way!

              It'll happen.
