  • First nitro

I still can't decide whether to get a nitro for my winter project. This will be my first nitro so I'm abit wary on getting one. Are there any posts on this forum that I should have a look at? Also how hard are the engines to tune?

I'd say that if you just want to tune it so it runs nice and reliably with reasonable power then they are not hard at all. If you want to try and tune it to perfection to get absolutely the maximum available power without crossing the line and blowing the engine then that would be much more difficult and require a good amount of experience.

Agreed. The OS50 is a very straight-forward IC engine to tune to a 'generally acceptable' level of power. Not so for the TT Redline 53 or from what has been said on this forum the OS55. Plus, there is a huge amount of OS50 experience on this forum.

Single needle carbs like the OS50 are definitely easier than twin needle carbs like the OS55 or 90. (Not sure if the TT53 is single or twin?). I had an OS50 as my first nitro and never had any trouble with it. In fact for much of the time I was using a Carbsmart which I reckon is a great tool for inexperienced engine tuners.

I was concerned about engine tuning as well before I got my first nitro because I had a little experience with nitro fixed-wing and the engines seemed kinda finicky.

The thing about the OS50 Hyper is that there is often a rough spot in the rpm range which cannot be tuned out but it's generally only noticed before take off when the engine is revving up and getting the rotor up to speed. The rest of the time you're running above the rough patch. This is something the dual needle carbs can tune out but then it's one more thing to adjust.

But the bottom line is that modern heli engines are generally very easy to tune and can be quite trouble-free.

Once you have the needles set you don't have to touch them unless you change fuel or the weather changes drastically etc.

(my experience is with OS engines)

I have to agree with the above. My first 50 was an OS50 and its still running fine. Are you part of a club as I am sure you could get help with any engine if needed

...and I actually feel safer with a nitro than an electric. I know nothing is going to go pear shaped when I switch on the electrics with my 600NP, as the engine and rotor are not live. I can check the electrics and controls, then when ready, start the engine. I'm very comfortable with a nitro.

Very true, ive had an eco 8 spin up in my office, very scary!
Nitro all the way, it may be a bit mesy, finiky, noisey and smelly but on the plus side it's noisey, smelly and you just have to keep topping up the fuel

Cheers guys you've persuaded me to get one. Now got to decide which one, comes down to either the outrage velocity 50 or the 90?

Since its your first one.. I say the Velo 50.. you only hear good things about it as its established unlike the new 90 and you can go easy learning before going for the big boy!!

90 size is easier to fly as it holds in the air longer than a 50 but its more costly.I'd say 90 if you know how to fly but if you never flown before than go for 50 as a 90 is quite intimidating.

Been flying for over a year on my Msh protos so I'm fine with that part and as for the cost of repairing and running a 90, its not a problem. So that's 1 for the 50 and 1 for the 90. I'm more inclined to get the 90 at the moment.

my first nitro is my current trex 700 3g and its a beast but at the same time very easy to fly and has massive air prescence my new venture is the newly aquired velocity 50 which is almost as long as the 700 ive only hovered it when setting it up but this week am changing the electrics so fingers crossed for the weekend weather wise but its a sweet heli oh and it is flybarred
