  • HELP Best Heli for a beginner?

    Hi Guys

Im new to the rc heli world, and I must say Im finding it tuff. A few months ago I decided to take a jump for a 6ch heli even with having no experience with any heli. I bought a belt cp v2, and I find it increasingly hard to handle, ie hover. So I bought pheonix sim and trying to hover the belt in it, is a bitch. However I can hover the trex 500 no probs on the sim and fly around. So I was wondering if the characteristics of the trex 500 are similiar to the sim. As i heard before the trex 500 was a good beginner heli?

So i want to no what your opinion is, should i learn with the cp v2 or change. Please help cuz I really want to experience more of this hobby.

    Thanks
    CiaranMal1

In my opinion the bigger heli the better. Are you a member if a club? Do you want to say with electric or go nitro ?? The 1st proper heli I bought was a raptor 50 and it brought my flying on leaps and bounds so if you are serious about the hobby then go for a 50 nitro. Failing that a 500 is a perfect starting heli

A fifty is no good as a starter if crash costs would make you give up on the hobby, or if you have no private field to fly in. In general I would say a T500 is the best compromise for many, reasonable build cost, reasonably stable, reasonable crash and battery cost...

So, get the biggest heli you can afford to build, run and repair but only as big as your field will make practical.

the cp v2 from what I have read on here, is not a good helicopter and not really that well thought of, my first 6ch is a trex 450 se v2, i really like this heli, batterys are cheaper, spares are cheaper, can handle a little wind (although not gail force )

the thing that I have always been told and I will tell you is, buy what you can afford to crash, there is no point going out and uying a .50 sized heli, crash it then leave it on the shelf for months waiting to get parts, stick time is everything with this hobby, as I am finding out.

Also practice with larger heli's on phoenix, they seem alot more real, a bit better to handle, and definately easier to see

As far as crash cost goes, i crashed the 450 so many times although the cost of each crash is minimal it all adds up. i bought a raptor 50 and only crashed once in a year, so running a 450 does not always work out cheaper.
big heli's are easier to fly.

And Nitro is the only way to go. lol

For an outdoor machine, a Trex 500 would be an excellent choice. Greater stability than a 450, not as costly to repair as a 600/700. Nitro is not necessarily the only way ahead, as battery technology has come on in leaps an bounds.

hey, thats a good point derrick, never thought about it like that, but then you did have the experience of a 450 first before you went to the rappy, its all on what you would feel confident enough to fly with,

Is this the most common thread topic ever?

The search results can be overwhelming too, try typing in 'best first heli' and just see how many seemingly useless posts come up.....

Also look at the responses so far - everything from a 450 leccy to a 50 nitro!

But the answers in the end boil down to these simple things

                    How big can you afford
Where are you planning to fly it

Thanks for the replies guys, just to answer ur replies,

Im totally new to this always had an interest, Im from northern Ireland and there are not to many clubs about near me so im not part of a club but hopefully with a bit of experience im hoping to join one if available locally. I could afford up to the costs of a trex 600 electric and there are available fields around were I can fly. So do you guys suggest selling the belt cp v2 and buying a 500 size heli to get me started even though I have no practical flying experience or sticking with the belt cp v2?

                      Thanks

The 500 is a perfect heli to start with. If you could stick a beastx on it as well. You will love it. I have one

you'll prob need a tx aswell then? a decent lipo charger, lipo's, then you'll be off, as im guessing none of the stuff that you have with the cp will be any good for a trex 500
