Without trying to be over dramatic, UK winter sea temperatures can kill in <30 minutes so I tend to take thermal protection a little seriously. Scallybert is right about the layering thing. Two or three thin layers are way more effective than one thick layer. Avoid using nylon base layers as they hold sweat next to your skin which dramatically speeds up heat loss. A decent pair of thermal insoles can make a big difference too.

Got a pair of these the other day. They are LUSH . Tostie feet, And flexible, Light, and waterproof. Got mine from mole valley £38. Should be able to get them from any Horsey type shop - Dont knock em till you have tried a pair on !!
