  • How did you get into heli's?

I bought my first heli nearly 2 years ago after watching this video of Daniel Katzav and being completely amazed. I never thought such things were possible and was/still am determined to be able to make a heli fly like that!

How did your heli obsession start?

I bought one of those stupid little foam IR thingies to mess about with in my office.. the decided it was limiting and bougth a contra-rotating lama to play with.. thenf oolshly thought I ought to get something that looked a bit more like a heli...

After wasting my money on an HBK2 which i just couldnlt fly and spending more time mending it..even more stupidly I bought a second one to be able to fly while I fixed the first....

.. after several weeks of just not getting the hang of it I bought the sim. Yup I did everything the wrong way around..

When i could fly the sim but still couldn't get that blasted HBK2's under control then my stubborness came into play.

I decided I needed to know if it was my rank inability with these things or the model.. so next came a prebuilt 450v2.. which to my amazement I could actually hover out of the box..

£20K later (and some great models) and I'm still too stupid to realise my limitations....

... but I'm darned good at rebuilding helis...

I've always been into rotary flight but like many others it started with a 2 channel, then a co-ax and then onto 6 channel upwards

The first one was a complete 'that looks like good fun'. By the Sceadu I had found a club and my destiny and bank balance were doomed.

I was flying gliders in the early 90s. Went to the sandown show and saw curtis fly.. played on aerochopper but never had the money to get into helis.

around 2002 i got an ikarus piccolo from a friend second hand, then a concept 30srx then a raptor 50 from rcslopesurfer. I dread to think how much i have spent on this sport since then!

My Misses asked me to buy some sort of pool toy for our daughter - something that swum or was remote controlled and every site I went to, I kept seeing these great little contr-rotating helicopters. Still hadnt got a pool toy yet so I went around to my local model shop to get a little speedboat or something for her. 20 minutes later I cam out with a century spirit 2.4ghz and havent looked back. As an offshoot to this, my father-in-law saw the spirit and now has a staggering 20 helicopters!!!!

It was when I was 13 (17yrs ago).. We went Poole to visit my dad in his new job and when walking round town, we went into a model shop.. hanging from the ceiling was a Raptor of some sort.. I fell in love with it.. wanted one but knew this was way to expensive for once.. that started my love of Helis..

7 yrs ago.. I decided to buy my first one after some prompt on tv or something.. brought a Protech Zoom (crap elec's) and spent more time upgrading everything than flying.. I didnt have any help.. crashed it twice and gave up/sold it after a month!

Latest attemp, Dec 09.. Mini Titan.. crashed again on first flight.. didnt like it.. stayed on the shelf! Then I joined this site (best help/advice ever!) brought a T500 in feb.. and finally gave me the confidence and learnt to fly! Then Dave made me decide on my first Nitro in March which I love now!.. just cant decide on a 90 now after seeing how my bank balance got battered in 9 mths, I think I've learnt that bling dont help my flying

Love of RC Heli's started many moons ago when I was a lad & used to visit the LHS for model car parts, always wanted a heli since then, then after a real heli lesson had the bug.

Then decided to try RC Heli's, bought my Rappy 30 in July, found this forum & have not looked back.

LOL.. It was back in (mid) 2006, when I wanted to gift a ring to my girlfriend... thought I'd surprise her in a fancy way by lifting it up, tied to the skids of a model helicopter!!!

Little did I know about the hobby or how things were supposed to be done!

But this got me reading and reading and then came along heliproz where I got my first 450 from.

The girl has gone. Lots of money spent. Many sleeps later... the hobby still remains!

(After reading more, I just decided to give the ring to her by hand - took my own time enjoying the build of the 450 )

Raced RC cars, then my mate got a shuttle given to him. He got a sim, and when we could hover in that we had a go with the suttle.

I went along to some fathers day event at a local National Trust property, a friend of my wifes husband and me got chatting and he mentioned he flew model heli's, and I thought that sounds a laugh, and here I am!

A breakthrough indeed, woohoo. I was a blinger to start with, I realised that it didn't help quite quickly too Eddie.
