I'm not sure that encouraging insurance fraud is ever good advice

Gets especially embarrassing if the stolen items are recovered and don't match what you claimed for ...

In any event the insurance companies are wise to this sort of thing and for expensive items they are likely to ask for some proof of purchase in the event of a claim.

I've got mine covered. Your house insurance will cover it all.. under specified or unspecified items, in or away from home. My limit in £3000 per single item (as I also have some expensive watches), It means I can claim up to that for each item if stolen.

Tony, If you are keeping it in your shed.. easy thing is to move them as already mentioned. But you can keep it in your shed as long as your home insurance covers the amount singlurly and more importantly covers your garden and shed!!

Ben, Under unspecified depending on a limit say £2500, its for a single article per claim or you can specify then individually at amounts? just give them a call, as policies varie from insurer to insurer.. find out whats the best and cheapest for you

Coincidence, just rung the Mrs to get the details and our policy is due for renewal so I will get them all added.

I have never really thought about it tbh but it was one of the first things I done when I got my watch also.

Rule one: Its only illegal if you get caught.

I'm not encouraging fraud (much) but with the amount of money some companies charge we should all try to get back something in return.
            Nik.

Problem is that is the same attitude exhibited by the scroats whose actions prompted this thread in the first place

The bit we get in return is insurance ... not like the sort of increases people seem to be quoting are actually all that much either.

I'm certainly no lover of the insurance companies and their habit of applying large increases each year to established customers borders on the criminal as well, but I prefer not to put both feet over the line by actually committing fraud

What I do each year though is get an alternative quote or two from companies in the same group then tell them I'm not renewing and miraculously the renewal fee drops dramatically (took 35% off this year for example).

If you just renew at the price they ask you are losing a lot of money each and every year.

My house insurance went up £150.. with no claims ever made.. said I'm going elsewhere and it dropped by £140??

What really took the P*$S is my Car insurance.. NO claims ever made again to renewal date.. and the fecker went up by £200.. even searching elsewhere it was no cheaper and on my other car it went up by £90 with no claims...

Thats a combined £300 this year!!

FRAUD is a JOKE.. HONEST people pay for it

One of my colleagues has insurance that covers items outside the home for accidental damage and loss e.g. mobile phones. I wonder if this would cover accidental damage to models when they're crashed?

This is completely wrong if people make fraudulent cliams then premiums go up for all policy holders.

I have no love for the insurance industry but fraud is fraud, regardless of getting caught or not.

If you dont like the premium your insurance company offers then find another that is cheaper or take the risk of not being insured and take the pain when you suffer a loss.

Back to the original posters question, add the items as specified items on your household insurance and I would suggest having them covered for all risks including away from the home then if they are stolen from the flying field you are also covered.

I know we often joke about such things around here and trust me I wish sometimes we could do more than just joke about it, but just in case anyone is ever seriously tempted to do it you need to consider the "Occupiers' Liability Act 1984".

Yes, in this country 'active defence' systems are rarely if ever legal sadly

Even in the case of someone committing a crime, you cannot lay down traps likely to cause injury

Yes if they are convicted and given a custodial sentence they will need the permission of the Court before they can sue you, but if you have actually wired up a door to the mains power supply you can expect the Court to grant their request ...

Hardly seems fair does it and we wonder why crime in general and theft in particular remains such a problem, you have to figure there would be a lot fewer thefts and certainly fewer repeat offenders if we could do something more 'damaging' about it.

Good advice, but do read the exclusions carefully as, for example, theft from and unattended and probably unlocked car (battery charging in the back/under the bonnet etc.) are often excluded, as might be theft of something from your bench/flight-box while you are out on the flight line.

Good to have the cover though for the occasions that are not excluded.
