  • Insuring Helis?

We had a couple of scroats sniffing round our property last night and fortunately one of the neighbours scared them off, whats unbelievable is that one of them called my neighbour a cheeky bastard!
So now im paranoid they might come back and want to get some insurance for my helis as they are stored in a purpose built 'shed' at the back of the house.
So can anybody recommend a good insurer and any tips on making sure that my insurance wont be found void for whatever reason as we all know that insurers will always look for that!
Would they be covered under the house insurance?
Would they be covered if they were stored in the garage?
I know that a shed isnt the most secure places to keep helis but its the only place they can go at the mo.
    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Cheers Tony

I would love to know this as well.

I would have thought as long as they named on the policy they would be insured in a locked garage or shed on the house insurance??

I have a fair size fish tank that I told them about and cos it was mentioned it is insured.

If they were sniffing round last night, it's got to be worth bringing them inside tonight and over the weekend? There's no way id leave them outside for a few nights after that happened. You got a security light?

i had fortis ins a while back and i had my shed broke into and some planks and 3 helis nicked. They paid out well they paid a shop to replace items.Make sure you have photos of all items tho and receiptes if you have them will make it easier to get the claim threw. If not 240 volts on the door handle works

Alot of insurance companies know about our hobby and i believe they come under a classification of sports equipment etc..

I know our home insurance does cover my helicopters and associated equipment when stored at home. The only thing i'm not sure about is about where they are stored as mine are stored inside the house.

It's probably worth a call to you insurance company to clarify your cover and see if you shed and its contents are covered.
            Thanks!

aye, nice fat security light and an obvious CCTV camera even if its fake

but personally theres no way i would leave helis stored outside. Too many temperature/moisture sensitive items in a heli.

You can usualy cover them with your house insurace, but you have specifically add them as in most cases in the small print they excluded radio controlled models/eqipment.

you might find problems as listing them as complete items but list them as parts .. that way the insurance will pay out upto a certain amount for each part ... and you wont have to add n e thing to your premiums that way

I Think someone once told me that anything with an 'engine' would not be covered under house insurance but not sure on that?
Maybe it was a condition of 'his' insurers.

Possibly, easiest way to clarify would be to call your insurers, if they’re not then ask them for a quote to increase your insurance to cover them.

I got all my heli equipment added to the policy, as named items, as you would, say, for an expensive ring/watch. I think it increased the premium abot £15 per year. Well worth it!

The named items route is probably the best one with most policies, you may need to give specific details of all the parts involved as well since it is relatively rare for everything on our models to come as a single retail kit.

Just be very clear if these are nitro helis that they contain an engine as most household policies have exclusions regarding engines.

The reason is to make sure that for example a car parked in an attached garage is not covered but you just want to be sure they have no room to wriggle out of the policy

If the helis are outside in a shed then you need to clearly declare that and make sure the policy covers named high value items stored outside the main building, again leave them with no uncertainty about exactly where they are stored, what they are worth and how the location is secured.

I'd heard about the 'non-complete' policy but wasn't sure on it, if you do have to list it as individual parts though just put down more expensive bits than what you actually have so if they do get pinched then at least you have some comfort in knowing that you'll be building a better one soon.
Personally if it was my house they were sniffing round, me and my baseball bat would be sitting close by for the next few days.
