  • Attaching Pinion To Motor Shaft???

Trying to help a friend get a small heli working but having obtained a new ESKY Motor for his heli I'm stumped as to how you attach the small pinion to the drive shaft?

I've tried heating the pinion with a flame and in boiling water but I can't get it on the shaft no matter how hard I try!

    Any ideas???

    Thanks

    John

Measure the shaft, and drill the centre of the pinion to the correct size. You could then green loctite it to stop it from coming off, or grind a small flat on it so the grub screw can locate onto it to avoid slipping.

Thanks guys, I suppose I should explain this motor and drive shaft is very small unlike the bigger motors that have grub screws to secure the pinion!

I might have managed a sort of fix, I've used a Dremel to shorten the shaft a little and then gently eased the pinion on in a vice it's really tight so I dont think it will ever come off!

Ughh I hate this small stuff

That's a friction fit pinion my friend.... I started out on an Esky belt cp and those pinions were a PITA stupid design!!

You had to use a pinion puller to get them off- not sure if that worked in reverse though as I never owned one, just dremelled them off!

You could try sticking the motor in the freezer, then heating the pinion before you tap it on.... watch your hands though!

The pinion on my 250 is secured with green threadlock. Hence I'd have gne with the drill it and loctite it suggestions.

Seems like you got it on tho eh?

Yes got the pinion on, it is a friction pinion as suggested above so requires brute force!

I still hate this small stuff

Been trying to sort out a little HBK2 for a friend who has been trying to learn to fly for quite some time, got him a new motor & esc from HK but having got it working this morning in the warehouse I have to say it's the most unstable / unflyable pice of junk I've ever seen!

Havent got the heart to tell him it a waste of money and effort

You've got to tell him.... I waisted a year with my belt cp and that was a bigger bird! Biggest regret in this hobby by far!
