  • Starting a TREX 600 NSP

    Hi
I've bought a TREX 600 NSP, but have yet to fly it.
I'm looking at starting gear, and have a few questions which maybe you guys can answer.....
1/. What size Hex shaft is needed, is it 6mm? Should I get one of these with my aero starter?
2/. Is it worth investing in one of the 'battery powered' starters, such as the Hyper Electric Rota being sold on Ebay?? are they powerful enough?
3/. Should I buy the Align power starter?
    4/. Any other info appreciated!

    Thanks

Yes it is a 6mm hex shaft, and I start mine with an Align power starter. This gets some bad press - cheers Mattie and Richie for the vid - but is perfectly reasonable at starting a 50 sized engine. The next step up would be a Sullivan. Incidentally, before i got the Align starter, I used a 6mm hex shaft in a battery Ryobi drill.

      1. Yes 6mm
2.that starter is probably not powerful enough because it's deigned to start smaller engines which would be easier to turn.. (well that's my experience of 50 vs 90 size engines)
3.Sure, it's designed for to do exactly that job by the people who made your heli.
      4. You could get a different starter but tbh the align unit is compact, tidy and portable so makes the trek to the field a whole lot nicer

Edit: D'oh that's what you get for not refreshing your page before posting lol.
      Nice one Coptermanic

          >> 4/. Any other info appreciated!

          Heli starting 101
          - one foot on the skid
          - one hand on the opposite blade grip
          - the starter blocks the rotor in forwards direction
          - start the engine
          - if it hot-starts, reach around with one hand and squeeze shut the exhaust deflector (the fat silicon pipe where the hot exhaust gases come out).

My Align starters still working, good bit of kit
I left the hobby 3 years ago and discovered Women.

            I wish I never left.

Looks about as good as I've seen. Any idea where I can get the 6mm shaft?

                Thanks

                    Thanks for the reply.
I was thinking the shaft for use in the drill may be a couple of quid, and obtainable from a non-heli specialist.....
                    Anyone?

                    Cheers

As long as its 6mm and a hex shape then anything will do I suppose, as long as its not soft otherwise itl round.

I too have always used my trusty Dewalt 18 volt drill, never had any problems starting my 600 - it will even drill holes something the Align and Sullivan starters can't do

The beauty of the Align startr is that you tuck it in your back pocket and walk to the flight line with it for those annoying times when it cuts out just as you put it down, you'll need a big pocket for the drill!

Just buy a normal allen key wrench and cut the bend off so your left with one straight 6mm shaft. Its advisable to get the 'ball-end' type for ease of insertion and removal from the start cup.
                              Thanks, Chris
