  • Bit of a weird one.

Today I went out flying with my Evo 50, and after my last flight I noticed that a chunk of the skin of one of the blades, about 10cm from the root on the upper surface of the leading edge has peeled away, exposing the carbon (I assume its carbon) beneath, the entire weaved part is gone, as if you where to take a scalpel to a wood blade and cut the covering off to expose the wood.

The missing chunk would be about half the size of a postage stamp.

The blades are NHP razor pros, they have never ever been in a crash, it looks like there is a seam along the leading edge where the top and bottom layers meet, and its failed.

They are only about 6-7 months old and havnt been flown much, do you think midlands would replace them considering they are under a year old, which means they should be covered by the standard 12 month warranty of purchased goods in the UK?

If I have time later on I will post pictures, at first I thought maybe it hit a rather large bug or something, but considering the seem being there, I'm am thinking that it was a manufacturing problem.

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

nothing to loose by phoning them and asking is there certainly sounds like a manufacturing defect.

      Ok heres the picture

I've just checked my e-mail from midlands and it was bought on the 22/11/06, so its barely 5 months old, and it hasnt had many hours on it, maybe four or five flight hours, and that seems a stretch considering how little flying I have done with it this year.

Why not contact NHP as well?

They may be interested in taking a closer look at the damage.

Good idea, I will do that, it could save some other people some model helis in the future.

The blade isn't going that fast at the root so damage from a bug strike is unlikely...My little trex really pulverised a huge italian bug recently - I almost crashed laughing...it tried to fly past just above the hovering heli.
however as your pic shows that is a prime spot for some transport rash if that was the blade with the leading edge outward when they are folded back - as in your pic.

The blades where fine during the first two flights, that only appeared on the last flight, and it had not hit anything, in the car its on the back seat with the seatbelt arround it to stop it moving about, and there is nothing else in the back.

All the field equipment is in the boot while driving.

After the first two flights there was no damage, then suddenly after stopping at the end of the third this has appeared.

In the last eleven years of flying I have seen hangar rash, but nothing ever anywhere near this, and a friend of mine has said that NHPs in the past used to be prone to the carbon delaminating.

The fact that there is a seam all the way along the leading edge seems a poor design idea anyway, that would make it prone to failure.

I wonder if the seatbelt has caught on that seam around the blade and helped delamination along a bit?

                Cheers,

The belt doesnt go anywhere near the blades, it goes around the canopy, if it touches anything its the flybar out near the front.

I have been putting the belt arround my heli for years, this has never happened before, even with wood blades, the coverings where never damaged just by being in the back of the car.

                    That answers that then
It was just a thought (not knowing how it fits etc... it's always worth asking).
I hope you get it sorted!
