  • Holiday heli

    Hi gang,

I'm off on hols in a couple of weeks. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on a simple heli to take to practice on. Thinking the Blade SR might be a good choice as they're pretty cheap, reasonably robust and being (almost) RTF will keep things simple for me.

I have a Blade 400 too, but I think that might be just too big to take?

    What does everyone think?

And before anyone says it...I like being busy on holiday and I have permission from the missus.

Firstly - i personally wouldn't bother - on holiday i want nothing but to just step away from anything

However, If i had to then it would probably be a simulator as you'd probably have a laptop with you.

I'd do a RC Hotel holiday then i would take a heli but otherwise definately not.

Blade SR looks good from what I've seen on video, go for it, like you I'm off soon and wondering to take something, but I'll probably only take my MsR due to space and weight restrictions on the luggage !

If I wanted to take one, would prob be mSR. But for me, a hol is to get away from what I normally do, including trying to improve flying r/c heli's. Plus, wifey would probably divorce or kill me........!!!!!!

I'm torn whether to take something or not. Baggage is not a problem and I have the green light from the wife. Truth is, without taking time off I find it hard to make time for Heli practice so figured two weeks in Cyprus was the ideal opportunity. Plus I know I would get bored.

No laptop being taken, so Phoenix is not an option. I have an mSR and really done as much as I want to with that. Just want to get hovering and some basic manoering mastered.

I found that, Cyprus being a small island in a big sea, gets alot of wind, can be a bit breezy on the coast, might fair better inland, so take a trex 600 ! lol

I would love to take my T-Rex 600N...but then I'd need to get a flight case, more spares, fuel etc. Maybe next year.

I do have a Blade 400 - but only one Lipo. Getting another 4 or 5 will be £200-£250 plus suitable case, and it's a bit more complex (and expensive) to fix than a Blade SR, whereas an SR has everything in the box, Lipos are £25, blades £10 or so, and £30 for a few other spare bits and bobs. And I think the Blade SR in it's box will fit ok in my suitcase.

                So that's my thinking.

I shall be taking my Gaui 200 to Turkey with me, just to keep my hand in, I wanted to take the 600 but the wife started bitching about how much room it took up in the case!

Right! We can fit 30 pairs of shoes in but not my 600?

You reckon you could get your 600 in the case? I haven't tried but worried it might be too fragile to go in. Mmmm...that might change things.

Anyone would think flying RC helis is a job lol- it's a hobby I'd take a Trex 250 if you have room and permission- I suppose the only down side is charging- at least with an MSR you can take the battery loaded charger. Saying that, I think i would get shot if I tried to take one on holiday................................despite wanting to.

I don't think I have the time to get a Trex 250 built and set up in time - hence the easy option of a Blade SR.

I did think about the Trex 250, but as I'm still a learner I figured it would be too twitchy for learning, and I should get my Trex 450 setup before building another one!

Fair enough- Blade SR sounds perfect then

Right..after a bit of umm'ing and ahh'ing, I'm going to take the Blade 400 anyway. My mate has a trashed one, so I can have his battery and the "remains" of the heli, plus all his spares. So, if I get another 3 or 4 lipos, what are the sensible spares I should take?

I already have a feathering shaft set and a landing gear set. I'll get a couple of sets of blades (main and tail), a couple of tail booms, Blade grips (main and tail), the Gyro, ESC and servos from the trashed 400, and a main shaft or two. Anything else worth getting?

If I *really* kill it out there then I'll strip the bits that are salvagable and sling the rest. I'll take my DX6i rather than my DX7 for the same reason as I won't cry if it gets broken.
