  • Removing Magnets from Fan

    Hi all,

I have an ALIGN metal fan which I am going to install on my OS50 to go in my Vision 50 comp. I need to take the magnets out as I'm using a revlock 10 which needs only one magnet and counterweight. What's the best way to get them out? Bake the fan in the oven? Soldering iron?

    Cheers!
    Harry

drill a small hole on the opposite side and poke out with a screw driver

I think heat will demagnetise the magnet so that probably wouldn't be the best option

Sorry I forgot to mention that. Yeah heat will, but I will be putting in the magnet that came with the revlock.

Regarding drilling, unfortunately it's not an option as the magnets sit right above the fins

Like Dannyyy said, just drill a tiny hole in the back of the fan and then just push the magnets out. It did that with mine and it did the job nicely

Edit: I'm pretty sure that the Align Governor only uses one magnet as well, one is set positive and the other negative so the governor only picks one up. would it not work like that with the Revlock?

The Heat option then If your not going to use the magnets again then use a soldering iron to heat up and melt the epoxy then use somthing to pull it out

Nope the revlock ignores polarity, so it would read both negative and positive, meaning it would read the speed as twice it actually is, and then make the engine run at half speed.

Slightly off topic, but would this socket set be any good for removing the fan nut?

Ahh no worries, wasn't sure if that was the case or not. Anyway if your not going to use them again just get some heat on the magnets and get them out that way

I've removed the magnets a couple of times now and for me drilling a 1mm hole behind the magnet and then pushing it out with a panel pin has worked fine.

Cool thanks I saw that. Is the inner hole (not the 10mm hex for example) big enough to go around the threaded cam shaft where the nut screws on?

Is that what the 1/4" drive size is?

Regarding the magnet, I'll try a soldering iron first and just leave the other one in. I'll replace the heat knackered one with the brass counterweight.

If that fails, I'll just bake the whole thing and use the CMS supplied magnet and bin the two cooked ones

A magnet is a magnet and as the revlock doesn't care whether the north or south pole is facing the sensor you only need to remove one of the magnets not both of them. Then fit the counter weight.

Nevermind, can't use the ALIGN fan, different fittings. OK so I've got the magnets epoxied into the plastic ELY Q fan. Do I use thread lock between the fan hub and the crank shaft? Or just on the nut? Blue or red?
