  • Charging 2 x 6S packs

OK, so a question for all you using 2 6S packs in series on your big electric birds. How are you charging/balancing your packs? Are you using a charger that can charge both at the same time?

I currently use the Cellpro 10S to do this on my 2 x4S pack that I use on my 8S Knight but obviously this can't cope with 12S.

What chargers are there out there that I can use to charge 2 6S packs either as a 12S or together.

    Your thoughts are appreciated!

You can charge them in parallel.

You will need a balance y-lead and a discharge y-lead.

If you search this site you should find all you need to know

I have the lipro quad 6 charger (this one) powered by a pro peak 25amp power supply (this one) which can charge up to 4 lipos at a time at up to 5 amps each but each channel only delivers 50 watts.

This means that although I can ramp up the amps to 5 this only charges a 6 cell 22.2v pack at a max rate of 2.252amps (50watts divided by 22.2v = 2.252) so this means that my 2600 mAh lipos are being charged at a a little under 1c and my 3000 mAh lipos are being charged at 0.75c which is no bad thing anyway.

If I wanted to charge at 2c then my charger would have to pump out over 100 watts. Take a look here for more info on chargers and here for good info on lipos (both articles really helped me to understand how lipos and chargers function).

The fact is though, because the Lipro Quad charger can charge 4 lipos at a time, I can obviously charge 4 of them in the same time that I would have been able to charge just one - possibly two on other chargers, which works well for me. My 6s lipos take about 65 to 80 mins to charge/balance on average.

          Hope this helps.

          Cheers,
          Simon

I use a Hyperion Duo which delivers a massive 180 watts per channel and have it powered by a PSU that delivers 12-18v output.

I charge at home and at the field with it and it is the best charger by far out there at the moment. I also have to other 6s capable chargers but really dont need them no more as this does it all.

It will charge 2 x 6s 5000 packs in around 45min and it sync charges them so it does it as 1 pack if that makes sense.

Also has store mode and loads of other features too.

If your gonna have big packs and run 12s birds then look no further than this

I'm using the Fusion Emperor L702B Pro.
Looking like a superb charger for 2x 6S packs at once

It needs a really good power supply to run it on - which they also make... the Fusion 600 Watt adjustable power supply.

                Cheers,

Just bought the Lipro Quad, seems pretty cool.

Just making a power supply for it as we speak

                    Thanks everyone for your input

Whilst the quad chargers are a nice cheap option I am dubious how accurately it will charge the packs and as I will be running them in series I ideally want them balanced in sync.

Ben, I think the Hyperion sounds like the one for me sync mode seems to be the same as how the cellpro deals with charging 2 and that is what I am really after for running them in series.

EDIT: Rob posted at same time so hadn't seen your post. Does the fusion also do the sync mode so it balances the 2 packs as if they were one?

OK I do not use 6s in series, but I have a fair number of 6s packs and use a Graupner Ultra Duo Plus 50 which will charge two at a time, a Lipro Quad which will charhe up to 4 at a time, and the Bantam BC8 will do one.

So I can charge up to 7 at a time, which enables me to get a batch of batteries charged up in quite a short time.

All 3 of these chargers are very good, and the Lipro Quad is great value for money (£100 at Inwoods)

Sorry to jump in here but I need to clear something up as I am looking at exactly what Gerd is in preperation for a 90 size elec.

Am I right in thinking that if I have a 13.8v 20A power supply, it is capable of putting out 276 Watts in total or 138 Watts per channel if using a 2 channel charger?

Therefore if I want to charge 2 x 6S 5000mAh packs together then that is 25.2V x 5A (1C charge) giving 126 Watts per channel or 252 Watts collectively????

So my power supply can handle it and I just need a charger with 2 Channels capable of putting out 126 Watts per channel?

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. All this elec stuff is new to me.
