  • glow plug failure! 2 in 2 days whats the cause?

i went out yesterday and put a couple of tanks through my 600 when at the end of the flight the engine suddenly stopped around 30ft up!luckily did a tidyish auto and landed with no damage!inspected the heli to find the plug had failed about half way down the coil!just been out today and another has failed, luckily right side up from being inverted seconds earlier! is there anything particular i should be looking at and what can cause plug failure?

Most likely running the engine lean.

Yes, burns too hot and destroys the integrity of the coil.

I bought a card of Enya No3 plugs some time back.

Must have had a fault with them because they all failed within quick time.

Put an OS8 plug in the same heli and it ran for weeks and weeks.

when did you last change the engine bearing? I had a load fo problems with going through bearings when mine were tired. Changed them and then no further problems.....

I also had similar problems with my OS 50. I had just rebuilt but had used silicon type sealant on the pipe, little bits of silicon where getting blown into the engine and lodging in the coils. Causing what looked like plug failure but was just sapping the heat from it.

If the coil is partially missing, my money is on a failing rear bearing. When it's wearing badly, it can start to break up and fire small piece's of bearing through the engine, straight at the glow plug. Normally if its a lean run, the coil will just be broken away at top and very white in appearance.
