  • ESU Getting Bloody Hot!

Hey guys, I'm finding after my last rebuild my ESU on my blade400 is getting really hot. You cant keep your finger on it for long. I have made sure the belt is not too tight but apart from that im stuck... Any thoughts? Or is it simply that its going to get hot as its hot outside at the moment anyway? I just dont want it to cut out in flight.

Mine has always got hot and i think the hot weather will affect it. I had a fellow club member check it and he suggested it was fine but would not want it any hotter.

I will second the weather factor, my ESC's get much hotter in this hot weather simply because the air around them is so warm.

You will find when the air temperature cools your electrics will also remain a lot cooler, I've been flying one battery in one heli then letting that cool while I fly the other one.

Back to back batteries would be pushing your luck in this heat!

I just hope that it don't cut out in flight if it gets too hot. Aw well only one way to find out lol. Thanks for the replies.

Make sure your motor pinion to main gear mesh is not too tight as that will cause problems.
          Worth a quick check

Also check the head and make sure there is no binding anywhere.

I will check it out thanks for the tips. When you say binding in the head how do you mean? Also as for the main gear mesh I will have a look. Thanks.

on one of my 450 have mounted the ESC next to and under the main gear to help air flow over it, not sure if you can or have all ready done this on the 400!

On the B400, the ESC is mounted forward of the main shaft/gear, under the motor (the RX is directly underneath the main gear) so is partially obscured by the canopy from the side when you have it on.

You can see it clearly in this picture (Warning: Bandwidth drain ahead): http://www.scautura.com/sites/scautu...s/DSCF1922.JPG

The ESC is the blue "package" directly beneath the motor - mine is getting "warm" in this weather, but nothing out of the ordinary (in my opinion), but I'm a relative newby.

The stock 400 ESC is a bit on the limit and can get hot. To make matters worse the thermal cut-out just switches off the ESC (no soft off) It happened to me when I was about 20ft up when 2 mins into my 4th battery running back to back flights.

Im not suprised it is getting hot in these conditions. It was quite a bit cooler than this when I had mine cut out so I would not run any more than 2 flights back to back (even then I think I would be a bit nervous doing it and I think a break after every flight would be the way to go)

The other options you have are to fit a different ESC (I fitted an align 35A ESC and not had a problem since) or to fit a seperate BEC to the blade so the ESC is not powering the servos.

Might also be worth cutting out some vents in the canopy, they won't completely solve the problem but might help get a bit more airflow of the esc.
