  • Flying Field Time Dilation

I went to the field this morning with my 450, 3 batteries and the timer set on my transmitter for 5 minutes.

There was nobody there but me, I flew with my spare batteries litterally at my feet, all but had the blades still spinning as I swapped each battery over....I should have been there no more than 16 minutes, so where did the half an hour go?

Matthew, they say time flies when you are enjoying yourself and you just proved it!!

Wish I could get some outdoors stick time in every day but by the time I drive to our field and back and even without getting out of the car, one and a half hours have gone.

Ahhh, you have noticed the conundrum. Flying helis creates a 'bubble' in the spacetime continuum and you enter relative time. Same thing happens with nitros, I know how many times I fill the tank and I know pretty much how long I can fly on each tank and yet hours go by.

This is the same process that leads to sock disappearance from the tumble drier. Any high speed revolving device creates a vortex which links to an alternative dimension. I know that the link from my tumble drier goes to a dimension inhabited with one-legged aliens.
Your mileage may differ depending on relative spacial relationships but in the case discussed here it is obvious that that alternative continuum has a higher gravity well compared to yours and time is indeed slowed - as you speculate. BUT not by as much as you thought..there was also an aspect of that gravity field lifting your heli and lengthening flight times by opposing the gravity of earth. Indeed you were lucky (or not) not to get sucked off the planet

Time is an illusion, Lunchtime doubly so.

It's because you were standing in a field. It is a matter of physics fact that time passes slowly when you are near something with a large mass.

Hence the reverse is true - stand away from something big and heavy and time passes quicker.

As an asside, with the electrics its a good idea to let the motor cool a little between flights, or you will considerably shorten its lifespan (thus adding more time to the time thats already vanishing, sorry).

This is good cause for a new competition for us leccy lovers. Who can get back in the air with the least time elapsed from skids touchdown to skids airbourne with a fresh pack, timer reset etc.
Yes the big sigpic is coming back

Becuase time passed so fast during the flight, when its mistakenly heading for the ground you end up with loads of extra seconds to put the sticks the right way instead of the wrong way!
