  • Worse than backwards tail blades?

After a particularly short "just one more flight vbefore we leave" incident with my 450 on Saturday I discovered I had finally managed to break a set of 450 blades with no damage near the root. So as I always planned, I've cut them down to try them as tail blades on my 600n.
    Has anyone tried this?
Can't be worse than normal tail blades on backwards can they?

Sawn off blades are handy for setting up the head indoors.
So i may as well try them as tail blades as they are the right size
      - they are most likely better than the £4 plastics

Well, they are not generally intended for the rpms a tailrotor spins but then if they're cut down quite a bit the blade roots should be able to handle considerably more speed.

I have some tail blades where the tip is just flat and there is some kind of foam inside and they are essentially the same thing you'd have with chopped off CF 450 blades.

Those sawn off open ended NHP tal blades worked really well. Drip superglue in the end to stop the grass picking the foam out and making them hollow.

The section of the 450 blade is thinner than the average tail blade, with max thickness further aft and might stall sooner as pitch increases.
Also the root reinforcing uses up more blade at the root, so probably cancells out the extra area from the wider chord.
