  • fire warning stickers

    Hi ,
Was driving upto the my flying site yeturday after picking up a few gallons of fuel and i was wondering is there any road laws stating if you have flamable fuel/ stubtance on board other than the fuel in the cars tank do you need a warning sticker on the car?

If I remember correctly then you're allowed to carry 1 gallon (4.54Litre) of petrol in a plastic containers. Anything above that means your insurance company may ask question should your car catch fire in an accident.

However, a heli fuel would be considered as a flammable liquid and for that you need to use a metal proactive container etc then the law becomes fairly silly.

There are similar issues in my other hobby of scuba diving relating to the cylinders we carry.

I'm not sure what the law or the insurance company require, but I view it as a common courtesy to give any emergency services a 'heads up' if you are carrying a significant quantity of anything likely to go bang or accelerate a fire so in the event of an accident they are forewarned and can react accordingly.

It used to be pretty easy to get suitable standard warning stickers from ebay but I've not looked lately.

As the law stands liquids like this are ok in upto 5ltr containers and you can carry as many as your like as long as they are not in containers bigger than 5ltrs

Anything more and you need a ADR license to carry them and need to display boards etc with the UN number etc

On a second note I would love to have stickers on the rear window about my hobby but with all the theft of rc stuff from cars I would advise against it..

Of course we are talking about fuel stickers here..

I suppose the few litres of heli fuel within the body of the car doesn't cause concern to the authorities, as your car will probably be able to contain around 40-50 litres of highly flamable fuel, just to make it go in the first instance.

However, stickers sound like fun. I personally prefer round stickers, orange, with death like symbols on them & masks, and broken bottle type things, with big gloves & numbers & big H's that nobody understands. I like to drive at around 60/90!!!!! when doing so, but that involves having a white paint pot top on the back of my car. I can't do that at the moment as it will cover my 'if you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you' sticker. Which most find a little over kill on my ford Ka........ but you can't be too safe can you.

Oops, better not mention the 4 jerrycans of avgas in the boot then if all you're allowed to carry is a gallon :-) (OTOH, the law is different here anyway)
