  • Gyro issue or is it me?

What a difference a better gyro and tail servo makes, although still a few issues with the gyro, gyro setting in hh on tx is at 66% which seems a little low, and when you switch back to rate the serve does NOT go back to centre, any ideas? Or ideas on a decent fairly inexpensive gyro to go with my ds520 servo?

Oh gyro is a 401b copy, I'm thinking must be a gyro issue as tail is also going left, so heli spinning right all the time in flight, may need to set tail up properly also but there is something not right with gyro/servo somewhere

any help would be appreciated, plus a link or info on how to set a tail up properly, have done everything else on the heli except this

    thanks in advance guys

Sounds to me like you haven't set up the gyro sensing, hence the heli spinning round. That needs doing first......without this, you ain't goin nowhere, apart from the model shop !!

Secondly, the tail will not automatically return to centre position whilst in HH mode. It only does this in Rate. You may have these two the wrong way round.

      Hi Kev,

      1) I'd start by taking a look at Finless Bob's vids on Helifreak about getting the mechanical setup perfect:

Trex 450 SE and general build videos are here - HeliFreak

      2) Next I'd take a watch of his Gyro 101 video to get an idea to see if your gyro is behaving how it should

Heli Skills and Setup 101 - LOOK here first! - HeliFreak

      3) If none of that works, it could be pants gyro. I have some nice Align/Quarks as well as some 401b clone gyros and the difference is immense. I think Quarks might still be on 1/3 off so if it comes to it get one of those.

Hope that helps... I went through much gyro pain getting my firs 450 going

      Velocity 50 (OS 55)
Trex 600LE (OS 50, quick uk bits)
      Trex 500 (DS520s all around, fl760)
      Trex 450 (hs65mgs, ds420 tail, gy401)
      Trex 250 (stock)

Don't worry about the servo going back to the centre, lots of gyros will do this and there's just no reason to be concerned.

With the 401b or GY401 you don't need to mess with rate mode just set the travel limits to get as close to full travel in both directions as possible without any binding.

On smaller helis like the 450 everything is very sensitive and it is important that the tail is mechanically setup really well and the tailrotor has plenty of pitch in both directions.

There is a recent thread here about the GY401 and I went though my normal setup routine for the 401 which applies to the 401b. I'll see if I can find it.

I am using a 401b on one of my 450s with an Acerlab D12 MG servo and it works very well but it is really important that everything is just right. Bigger helis seem much easier to get a stable tail in my experience, with 450s the setup and really everything about it has to be right in a narrow range where it will work properly, but it's totally doable

I bought a 401 clone/copy call it what you will a KDS800. I can honestly say I've never spent a better £20 in my life on heli bits. An absolutely stunning piece of kit. I replaced an Assan 401 copy so wasn't expecting an awful lot boy was I surprised. Backwards flight, hurricanes tail slides and I'm the one letting it down. I coupled this with a DS520 and I don't think you could buy better. I use a CSM SL720 on my 600 and expect an awful lot from a gyro/servo combo and I reckon I have found a little gem. Ebay special by the way.

Waveydavey - I've heard the KDS800 is a much better quality 401 clone than the myriad of other clones such as the HK401 and G401B. Even heard it has an SMM sensor like the Futaba and not a Piezo. I had a HK401 which fell to pieces and no longer works (cost me £10). Do you think the KDS800 is better quality? I'm skint but really need a gyro!

I've seen the KDS800 for around £22 on ebay and notice Fast Lad stock it. I'm pretty sure Fast Lad wouldn't stock a gyro like this if they didn't like it.

It will be the best £20 you spend. In my opinion just as good if not better. I haven't owned the HK401 but I have owned the 401B, I fitted the KDS800 and took my hammer to the 401B. An excellent product. I got mine Here

              Excellent delivery.

its fantastic, i took the advice of waveydavey, and its a fantastic gyro, ive only just started moving around a little and a few attempted circuits, buy gyro hold really well, even in a fair amount of wind, tail is still solid

Am I missing something? He's sold 7100 items and his feedback is 99.3%, no matter what you do someone will always be unhappy with you service. I don't know the bloke but I had mine in 3 days.

Thanks for the link. Mmm, I think I'll give it a try. I need a gyro for my T250. I know they're pretty big for smaller helis but the HK401 does fit a 250 so the KDS800 should be fine. I know plenty of T250 owners run the Gy401 too.

Be interesting to see how the KDS800 compares to the G401B on my Mini Titan.

It looks pretty decent to me at 99.3% considering the amount of stuff they've sold.

Actually read the feedback not just look at the score, it can be very misleading.
