  • Wake Up Call

Had a big wake up call to the dangers of this hobby today :afraid: No harm done in the end, though by pure luck/chance than judgemnent.

Was flying down at my local field, had gone down with my eldest lad Ewan (6) to meet Phil T and see how he was getting on with his new N5

Had a few good flights with the 500 and a test hover of the N5.

Weather was glorious and had been pushing myself to fly a bit harder and out of my comfort zone as lately I have really felt that all around me are progressing and I'm stood still

Was enjoying myself but was being sensible flying high and far out particularly as my lad was present and is not a regular down the flying field.

Coming out of a backwards high speed circuit not quiet sure what I did but Phil thought I was attempting a piro wall of death :eeek:. Anyway not sure entirely what happened whether my tail servo failed, tail blew out or I lost orientation but I suddenly had a battle on my hands.

But this is the bad bit for some reason by mind just froze and instead of having a quick attempt at a recovery and then into throttle hold, I fought it. Primarily I believe because I was worrying where my son might be although I knew he was behind the flight line. In the end it rocketed past my left shoulder at full chat coming to rest some 20 metres behind me when it wacked into a steel cargo container with a very loud bang!

And yes that blade is firmly embedded on the container.

Thankfully Ewan was down the other end of the flight line as was Phil. It could of all been so different if I had been down at South Cheshire or Byley on a busy Sunday with a busy pits behind me

This has really shaken me up and has even briefly made me consider chucking the towel in on this hobby I enjoy so much

What has really got me is that I did not go for throttle hold, I just froze.

So I think going forward I am going to accept my limitations, I am not and will never be a capable 3D pilot so I am going to start to concentrate my efforts on being a smooth safe sport flyer, maybe even take a look at F3C as I have utmost respect for the skill and dedication that takes. Also think F3C flying would suit my flying style far more

Just wanted to get this out of my system and maybe let my case serve as an example of what not to do!

Nick - First things first "Everyone was OK" yes scared the living S@@t out of you but no one hurt except that poor heli

Have written off a 600E due to a moments lack in concentration, no one else nearby but I accepted the heli had to go down and the damage just dident matter it became a safety first issue and rebuild tomorrow.

Sorry about your heli but you'll soon get back out there and be all the safer in future

good that nothing serious happened, sorry for the heli. It will recover

F3C can be fun (not the hovering, maybe). I have heard several times from spectators that it's nice to watch.
F3N is another choice. There are 40 set moves, and especially the first ones aren't that difficult. It's also quite useful as a list of exercises. For example, everybody can fly "some" figure 8. But flying the move exactly - straight approach, 90 degree turn, circle left, circle right, straight exit, constant altitude and speed - is quite challenging. Other than with the over-the-top 3D flying, the risk of crashing is relatively low.

Nick,as was said above at least nobody got hurt thats the main thing.
I can understand your concerns about the safety of others especially your kids but with respect, they arent usually with you and anyone else who is at the club all know the risks involved when others are flying or spectating.
You are probably the safest flyer we have at Byley and im sure others will agree. your flying is alot better than most there in my opinion plus your a wealth of knowledge but whatever you do dont give this hobby up mate
Your already a smooth and well acomplished sport flyer and i reckon F3C is probably a bigger challenge than learning 3D after putting in some practice for the B test.

          Holy crap

          Hi Nic,

I think anyone would have shat themselves tbh. I for one wish I could fly half as well as you do so I don't think its that, it will be more the shock of dumbing it which even all top pilots still do from time to time.

I'm in NO doubt that I will be still trying to master this brilliant hobby for a very long time and that's what makes it so appealing.

I was at byley today with Tom and Tony and we were all practicing the a and b test and we all said how much we enjoyed doing it. It was more of a challange to keep Tom from banging away.

              Blimey! Glad nobody was hurt.

I'm amazed that the blade stuck in the container. Did it actually cut into the metal, or is it merely stuck between the two half doors?

No it didn't cut the metal but embedded itself into the door flange

Can't beat getting stuck into a bit of flange tho, eh?

Tom, does tend to bang on

Serously should think it needs 2 of you to keep him in check!

Glad you and the others there are ok, seems you have a good attitude towards safety though.... distance = more time to warn people.

I'm of the opinion that fly how you want..... when you're the only one there.

In cases where you have the public or other club members, but especially the public since they'll likely not realise you've got a sick model, keep some distance, simple, like you mentioned with a pit full of people it could turn out a few of them are going to have a bad day otherwise.
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

gaz, giving up was only a very brief thought, would of gone crazy by now due to work stresses if it weren't for this hobby

however I do feel I need to make peace with myself over my progression in this hobby i.e. to stop worrying about whether I'm improving or not, matching my peers etc..

I seem to of lost sight of what is best in this hobby which is getting out of the house and down the field for some relaxing flying and some good natured banter

had a reality check today and suspect it was really just what the dr ordered...

I shall continue on but push the boundaries of my skill level a little more cautiously
