  • Have a laugh at me- Doh!

My 600N flew 1 tank and then wouldn't start - its been low on power ecently.. time to strip it down..so I flew my shiney nearly new 700N instead...

3 Tanks of my usual flips, rolls, stalls and tick-tocks and poor first attempts at aileron tick-tocks and short periods inverted. Fourth tank started much the same.. take off in idle down (governor all modes), flick to idle 1 and pull a few loops and flips to make sure everything is OK. I flew longer in this this session.. some travelling piros and travelling sideflips. Then flicked to idle 2 and did some way better elevator and aileron tick-tocks than usual. Flicked back and pulled a couple of tight loops and checked the tank and flipped inverted....

..just settling in inverted and headspeed starts bleeding off badly. Now I have to fly relatively low.. stiff neck and eyesight getting old.. was about 35/40 feet up when the headspeed first drops.

Last time I had an engine flame out inverted I tried to roll upright, lost too much headspeed and it rolled over again and slammed in on its head.. my skills are limited. So this time Brain decides to go for the inverted auto with inverted landing on the head button in the hope it limits the toll..

It came down pretty good..kept it level, fed in more negative as the blades started to spread and aimed for the soft long stuff... result was 1 cracked blade, one side of flybar slightly bent and a cracked link...

..It's then i notice I'm in idle down- Doh!

Been there and done that though i managed to save it, hard luck mate, but what nick said is true, set the normal head speed low so the idle up head speed is a noticable increase to prevent it happening again

..comes down to how much height ya have and how fast the reflexes.. I hadn't got either

The more I think about it the happier I am with the choice of head-button landed auto..kept the damage minimal... Well would have been less if it had never happenedbut we all know there's no time to think it out..gotta make a judgment and stick with it..

One of the best pilots I ever knew for recovering from impossible situations was Lee Elborn (now in New Zealand).

Must be about 10 years ago now, he was flying in F3C at the Nats. In the middle of his double roll, about 50 ft up, the tail let go, and the model started tumbling like crazy (what nowadays would be called a "chaos"!). He hit the hold, which stopped the tumbling, but the model dropped out inverted.

From this position, he not only carried out an inverted auto, but managed to move it off the runway at Barkston and over the grass, holding it off until the blades had almost stopped before touching it down!

No damage at all to the model, not even a bent flybar!

He got the biggest round of applause of the day, but sadly "Nul Points!"

Oh, and the cause of the failure? A grub screw coming loose on the shaft drive!

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

Skills like that I'l never have.
Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry "A man has to know his limitations".. age, reflexes, aged eyesight... soemthings one has to accept with time..
