  • Cant believe I was this stupid

I'm just beginning to learn to do some stuff in idle up and went out earlier this evening for some practice

All went well enough at first, but on my last flight I must of had a brain fart and forgot to flick into idle up What a prize PLONKER
Cant believe I was sooooo stupid

Crap - thats bad luck mate

I hope the damage is not to extensive.

I do this all the time on the sim. I think I need to get into the habbit of switching into IU as soon as my heli is off the ground when i start moving into aileron rolls, flips and loops else I can see that I will end up doing exactly the same thing

          Yep, Reckon your right.
The IU switch is just something I'm not in the habit of using on a regular basis.

Damage is pretty bad with all the usual parts. Servos, shafts, main gear etc, plus I'm going to need a new lower mainframe There might be more as I have yet to strip it down and inspect it

I did that at midland heli fly-in last year, no damage on my 'crash' but it was pretty funny. Chin up, everyone gets to be stupid at some point.

I can see me doing something like this...I never get dumb thumbs, I'm just dumb lol. Crashed the Belt by using the Esky Tx after it had been on the SIM and forgot to flick one of the micro switches back resulting in a servo not working - took off and instantly and flipped to the right into the ground. Flying the 4#3B in the kitchen and have managed to land it in the cats water bowl and the sink - it still flies! I've had a seized engine on the Raptor which I managed to free up, stuck the throttle linkage on back to front and did a full power start and burnt the clutch out. And those are just the stupid mistakes in the first year of flying...no doubt more to follow .

It's a learning process - I now ALWAYS do a full check of the helicopter before take off even if I have only changed the battery between flights - and double check everything when I fit a new part. Look on the bright side you had less power to the blades when it hit the deck so hopefully just superficial damage - although it did look like a lot came flying off of it -and you'll know to flick that switch before attempting 3D.

I liked the Hamlet music at the end...quality edit. All you needed was a puff of smoke to finish it off

That looks quite similar to my 450 crash from last week.

It is possible to do a flip or a loop in normal mode but you need a lot more height and / or some forward speed, then just flatten the pitch at the top of the loop.

I'll get mine upside down once more but after and only after I am totally certain the pinion won't slip again !

hard lines.. a simple thing to forget with large consequences...

If it helps, I have my helis set up so the normal and idle throttle and pitch curves match at half stick so I can flick to IU before taking off and that way I only fly in IU mode. It's now just routine to flick to IU after I've started my timer, both switches are next to each other on my TX..

hehe sorry, shouldn't laugh but as people have said it's a very easy thing to forget!
I learnt my lesson quick when I switched from flying my T-rex 500 which i always switch to idle up to spool up because it has the soft start ESC, to my Raptor 50. I took off, did a circuit or two to warm it up and then did a traveling front flip.... Whooops!! Luckily I noticed immediately and rammed home the cyclic to bring her round sharpish and everything was safe!

I hope you get the heli up and running again soon so you can get those flips dialled in Good luck with the repairs!

Yeah it was a definite deja-vu moment for me after seeing yours do the same thing. But at least yours was a mechanical failure and not because there was a plonker at the controls

Watching the heli smash itself to bits in slow motion at the end of the vid is a bit disconcerting as well

I take solace in knowing that the best lessons are learnt the hard way, and that I'm hopefully not going to make that same mistake again
