  • Comprehensive first build shopping list help

I am new to starting a build so really after some more of your expert help and experience.

I wonder if someone could point me in the direction of a comprehensive shopping list for my very first build. Basically a list which covers essentials. Just so that when I start I have everything I would need to just get on with it, plus buying it all in one go saves on excursions out, extra postage costs and the need to sneak more stuff in the house. If it comes in one package then it must all be part of the same combo

I understand that the list may be different dependant on the kit purchased, size of heli, elec or not etc...

So I'll specifically ask with regards to the heli I am interested in (Trex 450 Sport Super Combo KX015076).

I have decided on this heli after having now had some SIM time and quite a bit of time with the mSR learning the very basics.

If this heli is beyond me then also please give your opinions I will not mind or take offence and will take it all on board. I know you'll also all understand that to feed the addiction I will probably still by the 450 sport anyway

I hope this will also be helpful for any others in my situation.

    I'll start with the I have's:
    A DX7

Now for the I need's which seem to get more and more the longer I think about it - please add what I have missed or offer better options suited for my requirements.

    TREX 450 Sport Super

    Hex Set

    Allen Key set

    Pitch Gauge

    Ball Link Plier

    Greases \ Oil

    Deans connectors or EC3's

RX - Is a AR6200 best for this heli?

Battery or lets face it batteries

Battery charger \ balancer - Would a CellPro 10S be best for this heli and allow me to take onto 6S Li-Po's in future heli's or can you suggest other options?

Ideally I would also like to progress onto a Trex 500, so I would like anything I purchase to be able to progress with me saving me some money in the long run.

Sorry for all the questions, and i'll appoligise now for the many more which are sure to follow , but I'll try and get some photo's as I go to repay all the help.
    Alan

I would add blue locktite to that list for the metal to metal screws......oh and a transmitter. I'm sure you knew you needed one of those but it wasn't on your list

I took over to Luxembourg everything I needed to build a 450 sport and that was a DX6i + receiver, the 450 sport kit, Fast trax allan keys, screw driver, ball link pliers, thread lock and a pitch guage. The deans I soldered up in the uk

Spend an hour just reading the manual before opening any bag.

                      Will do.

I have also been reviewing the Finless Bob Pro build video's for some extra knowledge and also found this last night - which looks like it contains a lot of info which could help me - My Step by Step 450 Sport Super Combo Build... - HeliFreak

It has a link to these vid's specifically for the Sport - T-Rex 450 Sport Build Videos

but there is not as much info, plus he doesn't go into any Servo Setup \ Sub Trimming and Head Setup \ leveling etc which is where I think I would stuggle most on the setup of my first build.

Now I would mix and match the videos to get the info I need, but the Servo installations for the pro vs the sport are different.

Can anyone offer some more info on the servo setup \ regarding the Sport or will this all become clear from the manual?

                      Thanks

You'll also need a bit of heatshrink if you use Deans.

Also, probably some adhesive velcro sheets/strips would be handy, depending on how much comes with the kit. You'll need it for mounting batteries, receiver etc.

                          EDIT: Someone said that already!

You might want to add a craft knife, emery board and stainless steel tweezers to your tool box. Possibly not essential but I could not build a model without them.

One gotcha to watch for is the head comes pre-assembled. Take the feathering shaft out and re-thread lock it. I didn't on my first sport and had a minor disaster on its maiden flight. When I built the second one, I checked the head and the feathering shaft screws in that also weren't done properly.

NB, Its good advice not to trust any preassembled parts in any kit.

You may also want to use longer bolts for the main blades - the ones in the kit are a bit too short.

The only 'mods' I've made to my heli is a bit of clear tape along the bottom edge of the canopy to stop it chipping where it touches the frame and to add an earthing strap to connect the frame to the boom as I had static issues.
