I'd love to advise, but I just plugged and played to start with. I acctually had a HBK2 before I started with Phoenix, but used a cheaper sim ( RC Helimaster ) which got me going. I guess it depends on what you mean by ' Messing around '. I'm sure you will get some informative answers, but I just had to comment.....................

Well mate,
I used the Trex 600 Nitro Pro.
Settings that helped me:
Initially pitch to + 5* ---> get the basics of hovering right.
Then move it to + 10*/12*
Standard throttle and pitch curves:
Set the expo to 30% or 35% on the AIL and ELE. I dint find much of a use in setting the RUDD expo.. so left that to INH.
After setting up right, follow a STRICT pattern for learning. Graduate to the next move ONLY when you can control the previous one good.
Im using a JR X9303 radio mate... so the curves are set to that radio.
Started from scratch (the heli was all over the field!), now practising inverted hovers..
Hope it helps. Good luck
Cheers on,Last edited by CookieMan; 24-04-2010, 12:12 AM.Jason

It doesn't really matter whether your going nitro or electric choose something thats used at the club your in, insider knowledge is King. Others will have tips and advice that you don't get with exotics. I would go for a 50 and from my own experience, Nexus 30, Sceadu 30, Knight 3D (learned to fly on) and then 600N I would go for the Align. Headspeed of 1700 or so with soft dampers a bit of expo and landing gear and it's a pussycat. Most new members go for the 600 because of it's availability and price. Me a headspeed of 2100 no landing gear and it''s as good as I could ever handle. There are better models out there but for shear bang for buck it's hard to beat.
The 500 is another nice little machine but I have heard that they are a little twitchy.
