I have seen several threads about people encountering awkward people objecting to them flying. I live in rural Lincolnshire, the place is full of open space, as Im not a member of a club I take advantage, but sometimes come into contact with the general public. Not all are bad.

Last Saturday, I was flying at my "second" site, only had the raptor with me, because of problems with the Trex600. Second tank in I see a couple approaching, so I land straight away. The gentleman comes over to talk to me, impressed with the raptor asking lots of questions, which being a heli "bore" Im only to eager to answer. He also had a huge camera with him, and asked if i minded if he took a couple of pictures, I dont refuse an offer like that, so just a couple of pics later, off he went on his walk. On his way back I passed him a buisness card and asked if he would e-mail me any pictures he took. Today I got them, the old rappy looks good.

Some years ago, I was flying a small electric machine on a calm summer's evening in some park land. A chap wandered over and started questions which indicated he had some good knowledge of aircraft. When questioned, he told me he was a pilot for Bristow helicopters!

"Ah, so you fly the full-size ones", says I.

"No!", he replied, "I fly their fixed wing aircraft. Wouldn't get me up in a helicopter! Bunch of metal fatigue surrounded by an oil leak!"

At which point we both had a laugh and he wandered off!

One of the best descriptions of a heli I've ever heard!

Whilst on our annual pilgrimage to Charmouth we spent most of the time on the cliffs and in the bowl flying wings, some powered and some not. It's obviously a very popular walkers route and not one person complained. In fact the absolute opposite just about everyone of them stopped and asked about the wings and the helis we were flying even the ones wearing barbers. Baz nearly took a spaniels head off with a rather spirited landing with a wing and the owner was laughing. It just goes to show that we can share this fantastic hobby of ours and most are really interested in boys toys.

What rotorhead is that? Is it just the one that comes on the SE?

I have a new HTR head I have never tried. It has zero slop so should be more precise but the dampers feel very stiff.

My experience with people when I go flying is that often they are curious what's in the (heli) bag when I'm at the train stations. It's not really an obvious shape.

                      Hi trillian

Its a Quick UK head, I love it but, the fly bar carrier is made from cheese, and you need to replace it every 6 months. Apart from that ......

Just last week I was flying my 500 at Paragliding - learn to paraglide hang glide paramotor microlight. Training courses and holidays at the end of the day and one of the trainee hang glider pilots turned out to be a helicopter maintenance engineer. He'd not seen a model heli before and couldn't quite believe what the 500 was doing

I tends to wear on the fixings causing slop, I dont look on this as a big problem, I just check it everyso often and replace if needed
