  • My transition from small electric to large nitro

So I finally got my Raptor sorted. Bought another engine in the end. But that's a different story.

So with new engine installed, I test started it a few times, making sure and double sure not to hotstart. Then after my friend Pete gave it a once over, and did a little 3D with it I started her up, and hovered a whole tank... twice...

I had flown my G5 when I first got to the field, and it was a job to keep it in one place because of the wind. I guess it must've been about 9 or 10 mph. But the Raptor just sits there, solid as a flying rock, what wind!?? - unbelievable! I even took my fingers off the sticks twice! It instilled me with so much confidence after initially intimidating me with its size & noise. That was yesterday...

Last night & today, I practiced sensible stuff in Phoenix, and treated it like the real thing.

Went back today, left the G5 at home Flew another couple of tanks. On today's 2nd tank, I did my first ever forward flight. That was the level of confidence that this big heli has inspired me with. It wasn't much, but it was, nonetheless. I wouldn't've tried that with the G5 just yet, although I had to at the weekend, as it got away from me on account of me being too heavy handed - boy that little thing is fast!

In hind-sight, the G5's put me in good stead for the bigger heli, I guess.

Can't wait to fly a few more tanks now, and the forecast for the weekend and following week is 21 degrees C, sunny, and 2 mph winds

So if anyone is nervous about making the transition to a big heli, take it from me, they're sooo much easier to fly!

    Well done dude!
Great to see you're getting such a buzz out of it mate!

Nearly finished re-building the 700, then rebuild the 55 from my 3D (that ate it's piston last week) and I'll be ready for Sunday!

Have you heard back from your land owning friend yet?

Geez laweez are they really saying 21 degrees? I haven't looked at the forecasts this week as I have been buried with work.

Last weekend was excellent, Saturday and Sunday were nearly perfect flying days.

Anyway, I also like the contrast between a small 450 type heli and a bigger nitro (or petrol even ).

It's weird because (for me anyway) they are each easier in some ways. The smaller ones I tend to not be at all nervous and so can relax in one respect but then obviously you have to work the sticks a bit harder with a smaller heli. The bigger ones, although more stable, tend to introduce a phenomenon of 'over-thinking' sometimes. I'm speaking for myself here so this is prob not everyone's experience. so it's swings and roundabouts or whatever. But I love both and wouldn't want to give up either and I think the contrasts between the two help my flying in general.
