  • Flybarless

I see that loads of new helis are starting to come flybarless. What is the point? Sorry if that is a dum thing to ask but I thought the paddles helped it being more stable?

The paddles/flybar are effectively replaced by an electronic system which provides stabilisation to the heli. The benefits are less drag on the rotorhead and less weight and therefore an increase in power/flight times.

To put it another way, the flybarless system acts much like a tail gyro but for the cyclic controls.

I had no luck for a while with it but I persisted and I absolutley love it. It flys like the sim now and is so locked in. I am now selling my flybarred heli.

And I have 2 fitted to both my 700's and are working perfect.

                    Its all about setup.

Everyone I have seen has worked perfect including Steve Gerrard who I was flying with last weekend.

                    Ho hum.

I thought mine flew well on the 700 and 600ESP (for the few flights I had), but my 500 always had a wobble I couldn't dial out. Didn't want to go down the route of buying different blades as I thought I'd spent enough money for the 3g units in the first place. After some funny goings on with my 700 which ended up in a tip over, I lost confidence in the system and decided to go back to my flybars.

Had a great weekend with my 700 a couple of weeks ago after switching back, made me wonder why I bothered to change it in the first place.

It works well for some and not for others, but I don't feel it's all down to set up. A couple of 500's at my field range from being spot on to practically unflyable with almost identical set ups ???.
                      Cheers,
                      Simon

                        Very funny.

But with reference to the original post, what is the point? This could be a sensible debate if you want it to be.

For me, I don't have a flybarless heli, but I have tried one (3G on a 600) for one flight only, but have watched and learned over the last couple of months.

So, pros and cons of the 3G flybarless system maybe to start with....

                        Pros:

                        Less mechanical parts
Holds the heli dead level in the hover
Eliminates all head interactions = precise controls
                        Includes the tail gyro
                        Increases flight times
Releases more power from a given motor

                        Cons:

                        More electronic parts
The heli drifts in the hover
Doesn't self-correct to wind gusts like a flybar does
Does weird things at low head rpm (i.e. spool up and spool down), can lead to damage
                        Can't adjust gain values remotely

I'm sure there are many more, which our good members on here will add.

We will have to agree to disagree on that statement Simon.

I think the FBL is much better on the bigger heli's. Took me a lot of blood sweat and tears to get it to work right on my 450 Sport. Now that it does though, I only want to fly FBl models from now on. It's that good.

It's turned my 600 in to a Porn Star
it's harder faster and scares me.
It still looks like the old girl but she goes so different.

I have 21 flights and still getting used to it
think you should try one before you buy one.
