Align Governor accuracy ??

Hi,

Finally flew my 600 this w/e and for my first flight I set the head speed in the governor to 1900 RPM give or take a few revs. Now from my previous tests in the garden I thought the governor was under reading on the headspeed so one of the other heli flyers bought his tacho to test it for me.

So first test flight he tachs the head for me and it only reads 1740, way under what I had it set to in the TX so I had to increase by quite a bit to actually acheive the head speed I wanted. I did not expect it to be perfect but that's nearly 10% out.

I know you should fly it anyway to see how it flys and adjust accordingly but I wanted to mention it as there may be people flying with issues, nodding for example, and thinking the head speed must be OK as the governor is set. From my tests they are not that accurate and if you get the oportunity get the head speed tested so you know what it actually is rather than what the little chart tells you it is.

Interesting.... I did a similar test with an Align governor on a 600N a while ago and it turned out that the tach measurements were almost exactly the same as the headspeed figures in the manual so I found it to be very accurate.

Just a thought... I suppose you do realise that there are different figures in the manual for Futaba/Spektrum radio gear and for a TRex 600 or 700?

The figures in the instructions are a guide only.

What you should be more concerned about is how well it holds the target rpm throughout the flight envelope. So set it with the tach, and the Tx value is just whatever it is.

I've got two of them - one on my 700 and one on my JR 30. They work ok for me. There is an in-built delay which can cause a bit of over-speed on descents but it's nothing to worry about in my opinion, but that same delay also gives you a nice soft ramp up between head speeds. Only problem I've found with it is with the 30 which runs a very high engine speed - the governor simply doesn't go high enough to give a good effective rpm range at the head. Understandable I guess, because it's aimed at the Align 50 and 90 size models and not built for 30 size gearing.

Ill test mine at the weekend because i do have concerns over a few things on my Ely Q will be interesting to see what the results are with the different ratio mine runs over a trex.

Yes, there are three charts on the instructions I've got, all stating Trex 600 (8.5:1) with one for Futaba 1024PCM (35mhz I presume) one for Futaba 14T something and one for JR something else..

I used the futaba 14T... as it's futaba and 2.4

At the end of the day it's not a huge issue, I just thought it was worth a mention as it was something that 'was not what it said on the tin'.

Hi Martin, for your 7C you need to use the guide for futaba 1024. Also depends on whether you use end points or the gov menu as to the accuracy. I think I suggested a starting point of about 75% in the gov menu for idle up then if this feels good for you tach it to get a true figure.

Is your engine tuned? It will have a hard time reaching the target rpm if you are still rich. Hav you checked that the light only goes off as 1 of the magnets moves over the sensor? It should stay on for 1 of them

OK I'll check the 1024 chart just to see if it's any closer but it's set now so I'll leaving well alone for now.

I remember you saying a figure but I could not recall what it was, I was too busy looking at the shiney 600 in front of me I am using the % setting in the gov menu, not end points and to achieve the actual 1900 head speed I have had to set 77% in the TX.

I thin it's tuned OK, I've not touched the bottom end from what Pete had it set to and it's currently running about 1.25 turns out using 20% and yes I did double check the light goes out for only one of the magnets.



EDIT : Just checked the link above and the figures for the T9C TX seem to be correct :

75% is 1810rpm and 80% is 2010rpm so 77% will be approx 1900rpm.
