  • Killed a 12S Pack

Last night I was gonna hover my 600 in the garden, turned on the TX, turned on the heli electronics, plugged in the 12S pack (2x 6s) then a massive spark, loads of smoke and both packs puffed. What happened? Well... Not concentrating.. I had plugged both 6S packs into each other! ****ed up 2 perfectly good 6S packs. The connectors welded together and took a few seconds to seperate them making things worse. They are now in a bucket of salt water for the next 2 weeks. Lesson learned, don't chat to the neighbour over the fence as your connecting batteries in series.

Tell me about it! and whilst trying to seperate the connector I whacked my hand against the cf frame of the heli and sliced a nice gash in my finger...

Sorry to hear that, I'd have definately cut the packs open to see if there were any savageable cells, often in a short circuit situation the tabs between the cells unweld themselves and you can get something back.

What mah are they? I have 4 x 5000mah Loong max Tipple packs that I was using in my TRex 700, perfect condition, done 8 cycles each; £60 each delivered, if thats any help, although I suspect you were using 3000-3700mah in a 600.

                  Bucket of salt water?
Yes it is generally recognised as the safest way to dispose of a lipo.

                  1. Discharge it to about 2.8v per cell (as this unfortunate chap had killed his properly he couldn't do this bit)
                  2. Stick in a bucket of salty water for 24 hours (this safely removes the rest of the charge - salt because this raises the ec value (electrical conductivity) of the water)
                  3 Chuck in bin.

Should stop any possibility of the lipo becoming an incendiary device in the back of the dustbin van, or at landfill.

I did strip the heatshrink off them and could have salvaged a few cells but i dont really have any use for single cells and didnt want to take any risks so just condemned them to the salt water bucket. Im in the process of measuring up how much space i have in the 600 for 5000mah packs.

yes, but be prepared for a long wait: air freight will be backed up like a Greek toilet for weeks to come. I'm waiting on a couple of ESCs and I aint holding my breath!

But it is one that you won't repeat again.

Ouch! Yep, it's these mistakes which you don't make twice.

I also find it hard to get a heli ready for flying when I'm talking to someone, so it's best to just wait .
