  • Hooray - at last - Nose In and survived

Well, I decided today was the day to crack the Nose In phobia.

I have been tring recently to get past just right and left side in. For some reason I just bottle out every time, but today I decided that I would try something a little different.

I'm quite good now with nose in on the little MSR which has helped me a lot to deal with orientation issues, however doing it on the 450 seems to have been a real task!

So, I flew a few batteries to warm up - tried a few left and right side ins then set her down.

This time I decided to try taking off nose in to see if this would help, well after a couple of aborted attempts (bottled out more like), I finally took off and actually managed to hold her there for a few seconds, bottled out and landed. So I knew I could do it so with heart beating, I took off for a second time - brilliant - the MSR and sim training took over. Really weird feeling seeing the nose pointing at me.

Set her down and tried again and again, nice! Finally got a bit cocky and planted her down a little hard and the tail snagged and the belt broke, but no other damage.

So chuffed I did a little jig in the field, must have looked really stupid but I felt like a kid so I acted like one!!!

Going to try some more tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    Simon

Once you get really comfy with nose-in, besides being good for saving yourself in sticky situations, it's kinda fun. I actually really like seeing the heli facing me nose-in, I don't know why it just looks cool

Hey, Simon, that's brilliant! I know what you mean about the jig - I had a stupid grin on my face for hours after my first nose-in

Know what you mean about confidence with doing it with the mSR. I am getting better at FF with the mSR, and hope to translate that as you did onto a bigger heli, whenever I get back.....

This happened to me once only it was a large sheep turd the tail hit. That combined with uneven ground caused the loss of a nice set of TT carbon blades. (this was last summer)

Yes, the mSR has helped me tremendously as well. I can do a tail-first circuit with it now, but I don't think I'm ready to try it on the 500 yet.

                          Brian,

I know what you mean about trying this stuff on the 500 - the strange thing is though, I feel more confident with the 500 than the 450, probably because the 500 is soooo stable.

I'm going to do some more nose in this evening and when I'm more confident I will try it on the 500.

                          Mike,

Any news about when you can get out of Shanghai or do you think you will be drinking th ebeer there for some time yet??

                          Cheers,

Looking at the spread of the ash cloud and the current forecast weather situation E Atlantic, I will still be here on Wednesday, at least. Very little chance of change.
Must be eerily quiet, no planes, no trails...................

You are right, Simon, the 500 is a very stable bird. I just need more practice.
