  • just had very close call, inverted,no clunk line!

evening all! i have just come back from what is probably the most ass clenching flight ive ever had! i got the the new feathering spindle fitted today so thought id go out for a couple of tanks to chill out! got it into the hover and had a very slight nod!,into idle up couple of circuits and then started practising my inverted did a couple no worries on the third one as i brought the heli over into inverted the engine just shut down instantly!caught me out good style but managed to flip back about 5 foot from terra firma the clunk line has come away from the nipple in the tank and is no residing in the bottom of my tank

please could anyone answer a couple of questions?

if the clunk line was starting to fail would this make the heli nod??

would it cause any trouble with the tail?i.e it started trying to piro to the right when i landed it early on!

what sort of job is it to remove and replace the clunk and can i use standard fuel tube for now?

sorry for the questions but never had a failure like this before!

It'll nod if the headspeed is too low probably in combination with knackered dampers, nowt to do with the clunk line. Nowt to do with the tail either. Clunk line get some thin wall fuel tube, as long as it can drop from the bottom of the tank to the top when you turn the heli upside down it'll be fine. Make sure you cut it to the right length, 5mm off the back wall of the tank. I've found that removing the whole bung from the tank and cable tying the clunk onto the nipple the best way.

Andy, the heli nodding is probably something to do with you fitting new dampers, have you tightened the blades a bit too much?
a failed clunkline wouldnt make the tail spin as far as im aware and its a very simple job to replace the clunk on the 600.
Just pull the nipple and bung out carefully, after replacing the clunkline, refit the nipple ito the bung and then push back into the tank.
Dont put the bung in the tank without the nipple fitted or you will just push the bung inside the tank and you dont want to do that mate

thanks for that tony! i put the new sleeve in and got the dampers in nice and sitting flush! i might of over tightened the blades to be honest! i have just refiited a new clunk line1pretty straight forward really!and i also know what you mean about not pushing the bung into the tank! lol im gonna have another do tomorrow and hopefully be ok! didnt realise overtightening the blades causes nodding though!

not saying thats the cause, but its one of them,it cant be shot dampers as youve just replaced them, low headspeed is a common cause too.

gotta be something to do with the dampers as ive not touched anything else!possibly the washers in the grips??checked everything else over with no visible problems and just replaced all the fuel lines on the heli!

If your clunk line had a rip in it when it was breaking off/falling off then it could of been struggling to get fuel to the engine causing a varying head speed, (gyro could struggle) which might effect it in the ways described but TBH that's quite unlikely.... as suggested by others and yourself it is more likely to be the dampers etc.. greased em up good?

ps congrats on getting her down safe!

clunk line had a split where it slides over the nipple in tank! also just checked blades and they were very tight! just glad its here in one piece! hopefully get out in the morning and test it out!

if stuck you can use std fuel tube but be careful if you go inverted as the line may not flex enough to stay in the fuel

had a route through my box of bits and found some fuel tube quite alot thinner walled than my other stuff!fitted that and tried all angles with tank and it drops down and reaches all of it!! just hoping that it was tight blades causing the nod! will report back tomorrow!

all sorted now tightened blades correctly and flys sweet again! gonna have a play around with the gain on the 601 and possibly start leaning it out a little as the backplate only getting warm! had a excellent couple of tanks this morning! really does fly nice!
