  • Transmitter design.

I was playing on my daughters XBox last night and during a quiet moment between playing guitar for the Ramones and Driving an Audi R8 through the Italian Alps I was studying at the control pads.

The very first video games I ever played some 30 years ago were controlled by square boxes with buttons placed around them wherever there was a space, I guess this was dictated by manufacturing proccesses and limited technology at the time, but todays controllers are ergonomicaly designed to fit exactly into your hands with all the buttons, switches and sticks exactly where you want them.

Now if you look at the design of todays transmitters it seems there is little difference between todays Futaba's, JR's & Spektrum's in terms of layout to those of their predecessors. While the technology inside has come on leaps and bounds over the decades the basic layout is still remarkably similar.

I know E-Flite have gone some way towards advancing the feel of their Tx's, but for the serious flyer with the exception of rounded off corners there's not much difference in overall layout.

It seems like the Tx's for RC cars have evolved from the old days of sticks to the modern pistol shape trigger & wheel type, but flight model control is very much set in its ways.

For example if I just let my hands relax and take a natural flying position in front of me it would make more sense to have the bulk of the switches on the back of the casing. Imagine how much easier it would be if the trim sliders were on the back and you could operate them with your fingers without having to take your thumbs of the sticks. The idle up & throttle hold switches could be there too, I know there's a chance of knocking them when you put it down but they could have them reccessed or have guards around them like the trigger of a gun.

And I also think it would help a lot if the sides were more rounded and made out of the same stuff as modern car steering wheels so that they're easier to grip and more comfortable.

Maybe its just that there's just so many people out there who have got too used to this layout and the big Tx players think change isnt needed, in the same way that I'm typing this on a keyboard that is exactly the same shape and layout as the typewriter keyboards of a hundred years ago?

Great post Guy! How right you are too. I'm a pinch grip kinda guy and, to me, my fingers are in the most unnatural position when holding my Tx and sticks.

Good post, brought to mind that the reason the qwerty keyboard was designed as it is was to slow down the typist as the mechanics of the early typewriter could not keep up with the human driving it.

Think your suggestion about having trims etc on the rear is brilliant, you should apply for a patent.

It does seem strange that these big companies have put a lot of effort into the design and technology of every aspect of the hobby in terms of materials, power sources, flight characteristics, reliability, the list is endless, but the fundamental link between human being and the technology (fingers and thumbs) has not changed in 40 or 50 years.

How about gloves with motion sensor finger tips and the tx strapped to your waist..no need for sticks at all.just a combination of finger and wrist gestures and warm hands in the winter?

I'm sure I recently saw a conceptual Spektrum transmitter design on line somewhere recently, but cant seem to find it again, anyone?

We are set in our ways.
Just remember how everyone slagged the new spektrum design

Inovations are a built in tx tray that folds out of thebottom of the tx, little cubby holes etc.

I did a feature a couple of months back in my What'sUp column in Model Heli World...

I think Tx ergonomics are cr@p, particularly trims and switches.

I proposed 'Coolie Hat' trims and switches on the back, all reachable without moving fingers away from the sticks...

been thinking about this and think that the manufacturers are probably scared that if they bring out an inovative ergonimic design people will not take it up as it aint what they are used to.

Take the computer keyboard as an analagy, it was designed to be difficult to use and there have been several attempts to come up with an easier and more ergonomic design and none of them have really caught on as people have invested so much time in learning how to type on the existing design they are not willing to change.

Another thing that might put them off inovating is the age demographic of there target audience, ie there are a fair number of us who are no longer in the first flush of youth and there is a stereotype of us grumpy old men as being unwilling to accept change. God knows I am starting to get fed up with bloody MS releasing an new version of windows/office every couple of years just when I got used to the previous version.

Damn you Guy and Nige321..... I just bought a JR DSX12 and swore it would be my last ever TX...

I know exactly what you mean about switch access, and I fumble about a lot when I need to find the right switch, and the Nige321 design looks like it is on the right track.

If JR or Spektrum ever brought out a top end ergonomically designed TX.... I would have to go back on my word.....
