  • Raptor 30 v2 - Which Governor

    Hi,

Im looking at getting a governor for above heli but i dont have and dont have access to a tacho. As a beginner which would be the easiest for me to install and setup with out a governor.

    So a few questions.

    1) As a beginner which would be the easiest for me to install and setup with out a tacho??

    2) How do i know what gear ratio i have cos i believe i need this info?

    3) Do i calibrate them simply by throttle to min up min and up again then anything below 25% stick is idle and anthing above that is headspeed set when obvisouly entering gear ratio etc.

    Many Thanks,

    Jonny

If you are just a beginer why do you think you need a governor ? its just more things to go wrong when you are just starting.

Its good to learn how to set throtle and pitch curves first.

To find gear ratio divide number of teeth on main gear by number of teeth on pinion.

Futaba GV1 has the rpm shown on its display .

s a beginner i would'nt even bother with a governor, use your transmitters throttle and pitch curves to get the speed you want. I flew a raptor 50 for years with no governor. To work out your gear ratio, count the number of cogs on your pinion and main gear

Take your pick on the make of governor.

Alot of people use the Align RCE 600 (I think that's it anyway) but you have to use the 7th channel set up in your TX because it does not have a manual mode. I have a revlock 10 which is a little tricker to use and more sensative to engine tune but are very cheap now and just as effective once you get them right. You'll also need to glue a magnet into your fan, there should be holes there already to use.

The standard Raptor V2 has an 86t main gear and a 9t pinion so gear ratio is 9.5

So if you using 7ch TX / RX then you can take your pick but if your flying using 6ch then your governor will have to have a manual mode so you can set a head speed without using the TX.

            1) GV1 - you enter the Gear Ratio in to the unit. You are then asked to set you head speed. all this done without a tacho.
Throttle Jockey. On the model avionics web page there is a Head Speed calculator and also a Setup guide for a few different radio's.

2)Look at your instruction manual or go to the above web page and input you pinion and gear size in the Head Speed Calculator.

3)Most Governors work on a throttle input of below 25%-15% the governor is deactivated, above this the governor is engaged and using either your spare channel as the setpoint or a target RPM you have entered into the unit.

I would sugest going to a website of one of the manufacturers and reading one of the manuals. It would be very difficult for one of us to guide you over the whole process of setting one up. But am happy to try and answer questions.

I used an Align RCE-G600 on my Raptor (30) and it was great, very simple to set up, and worked well enough. I've got one on my Vibe 50 too, works great on that aswell for mild sports flying.

I'd recommend the backplate sensor though on any governor you get, i really struggled mounting the clutch bell style sensor on my raptor.

I've got the one from my raptor for sale on ebay right now for cheap without sensor if your interested, item number 140388579911

              Thanks

i like the idea of the backplate sensor dont need to take engine out then lol.

What governors can use this sensor and how would u programme it as there it would not matter about gear ratio or would it

                Cheers

Nope, gear ratio wouldn't be required, ideally you'd use a tach to set it up, but its not required, i set it so it sounds 'normal' and the engines not screaming in hover, and as long as it handles as you'd expect leave it at that. A tach is obviously the perfect way to set them up, but i haven't got one.

How to setup ones that don't need the gear ratio is usually by end point adjustment.

My set was with the Align, using channel 7 or 'AUX2' on a DX7. You would have the 0/OFF position of the AUX 2 switch to -100 as normal, but the 1/ON position would be sent to an ATV of say 60%.

Then to increase the headspeed you up this ATV, or decrease it accordingly, and at any time, you switch AUX2 off, and the governor is disabled.

This website helps alot with the specific guidance of the align and the dx7, not sure what transmitter you use
