If it helps, my DX7/Trex450 is set for 30 in Rate mode and 72 in AVCS mode. Those are not the gain values, which I reckon are about 40% and 44%. The mode is determined by the value (30 is less than 50 so is Rate, 72 is greater than 50 so is AVCS).

The GY401 must be powered up in AVCS mode for it to correctly initialise. I use the Rudder D/R switch to manually switch between gyro modes - so I switch that switch to the AVCS position before I switch on the helicopter. You can also configure the DX7 to switch between AVCS and Rate using the Flight Mode switch (Auto).

From what I can gather there is no single 'correct' way to do all this. Different transmitters work in different ways as you can see in the GY401 manual. Confusingly the DX7 has a flight mode for Hold in the Auto menu which I think means Throttle Hold rather than Heading Hold! Also, I think you can use end points rather than the gain values. Good luck

Ok I have been in the same position as you and there are at least two main ways of controlling the gyro/gain via the DX7 The two ways are:
You can change the way the DX7 controls the gyro in the main system menu (hold the left scroller/rocker switch down along with the select button as you power up) then with the correct heli selected use the same rocker switch to scroll to "input select"
you should see a screen with "Aux2" and "Gear" at the top. These relate to the inputs on your receiver onboard the heli. Then the two channel names bellow relate to where they are routed /controlled within the DX7. I always have my gyro signal lead plugged into the gear on my receiver. So if you now hit select so that that gear is selected you can now tell the DX7 what you want to use to control the gyro gain. If you set this to Gear you will then have to use your gear Travel adjust to control the gyro gain. (this is accessed via after turning on your DX7 pressing the left rocker switch down and select button then scroll to the "travel adjust" screen and hit select until you see the gear travel adjust pop up on screen) To set the lower value out of the two simply flick your gear switch to select it.

The second way to control the gyro is to select your "Input select" "Gear" as "Gyro"
then when you access your normal menu screens after powering up the DX7 then pressing left rocker down and select you will find a menu called "Gyro sens"
This screen now controls the gyro gain. you can also if needs be set the gyro to automatically set 2 different gain values in different flight modes: normal, stunt1, stunt2.
I use gain travel adjust and because the gyro can then be in HH or rate mode at a flick of your gain switch But some people/Gyros prefer Gyro sens. Just be careful using any sub trim on the rudder/Gear channels because I'm pretty sure some gyros see this as an input (same as giving left/right stick) think the align gyros do this but have had a 401 work fine with sub trim... don't hold me to that Hope this helps/makes sense and If anyone feels this is inaccurate please feel free to rectify my mistakes haha.

PS travel adjust on the "RUDD" controls the piro rate/speed
Anyways I hope that helped out, good luck with it all.

Using the travel adjust screen is probably the most simple way especially if you are not too familiar with the radio and don't need different gains and different head speeds.

I used the travel adjust on my 12fg as you had to change so many screens to tweek the gain - and it was easy to miss one, just ask Trev

Yes, can also use Travel Adjust - that's what I use on my 600.
