  • Easy jet heli regs for traveling

I know Rob is having a hard time getting info out of easy jet about there rules and regs over transporting RC helis.
The championship spring break ther will be a few of us doing this and just wanted to ask if any one has come across any issues or problems and how they packed there helis, lipos and other stuff.
    Any input would be great
    James

Not sure about nitro as no flammable liquids or solids, gasses allowed on any flight. best thing is to email easy jet.
    Thanks,
    Jake!

Yep the tanks will be dry, and i have emailed easyjet but as yet no responce.

I remember when the smiths went to america they got a letter from the bmfa explaining what was in the case and that helped.

Do you think I could get a letter from the RCHA then to explain what I have in my case. Do you reckon easyjet will then ask who the RCHA are?

Regarding batteries, at the following links you will find the UK CAA's latest advice:

                http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/1219/srg_d...s_20100216.pdf

                http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/1219/srg_d...ry20090925.pdf

                To highlight a few points:

                i) Keep spare batteries in original retail packaging. Original packaging (e.g. cardboard/plastic blister packs) is manufactured for the purposes of transporting the batteries and will ensure the terminals are protected.

ii) If original packaging is not available, insulate the terminals so they cannot come into contact with other metallic items. This can be achieved by packing each battery in its own protective case, resealable plastic bag (e.g. sturdy freezer or sandwich bag) or package, or by covering the terminals with insulation tape. It is suggested that both measures be taken for batteries with protruding or sharp terminals, such as those found inside smoke detectors.

iii) Pack spare [my comment - this means all including those that may be installed on the heli] batteries in carry-on baggage. If an incident occurs involving a battery, it is easier to detect and deal with if carriage is in the cabin, as opposed to the hold.

iv) Do not carry counterfeit batteries. In some parts of the world, fake batteries are produced which although appearing to be the same as the battery they are imitating, will not be fitted with necessary safety features. Batteries should only be purchased from reputable sources.

                v) Do not carry batteries which have been recalled for safety reasons. From time to time, manufacturers recall batteries because of safety concerns. These should not be carried by passengers.

Also read page four of the document at the second link.

I should also state that the above advice is a minimum requirement. The carriers concerned can adopt a more restrictive rule (i.e. no carriage of helis and/or LiPos) but cannot say you can if the above advice says you can't.

                Hope this helps.

After nearly an hour on live chat finally suggests I email them

                    Q. I have booked a flight for next month whereby I will be taking a model helicopter with me. are there any special terms I should be aware of
                    A. Yes, I can confirm that you can carry it as an hold luggage
Q are there any restrictions on this, I intend to take the helicopter in a hard golf case. it will be dry, i.e. no fuel and there will be some Lithium Polimar batteries in the case as well. can you please email me confirmation of this.
                    A. I can confirm that you can carry upto 20 kilos per passenger free of cost, however you can carry not more than 32 kilos per passenger by paying £10.00 per kilo.
                    Q. So I can carry the model Helicopter, and the lithium polimar batteries in the hold fully assembled with no restriction other than an overall weight limit?
                    A. I can confirm that the batteries should be sealed and non-spillable.
                    Q. with no restriction on numbers of batteries, again other than overall weight.
                    A. Please wait for few minutes while I confirm it from our higher authorities.
                    Q. Thank you
                    A. This will take some time, I would request you to please contact us after some time as our systems are working slow.
                    Q. better still, please email me when you have an answer to my questions, i have waited patiently for a long time this morning trying to get this answered and i do not want to have to go through all of this again
                    A. In this case I would advise you to send an e-mail to us via the link below:

When I was going to and from Kuwait I used to take my heli on as hand luggage (was my 450) along with all the lipos. However, there was 1 time when security would not allow me as they said that the batteries could be used to make an incendiary device and I had to put it in the hold.

You will have to put them (helis) in the hold anyway these days as there is no way it will fit within the size limits for carry on luggage.

The items I have highlighted above, as per my earlier post, are an absolute NO, irrespective of what the carrier says.

Trust me on this, I know.

I have been flying over to the RC Hotel in Corfu for a number of years now. The heli goes in the hold and the lipos are put in a fire proof bag and taken over in hand luggage. Never had any problems. Hope this helps
                          Cheers
