  • Very frightening Lipo incident...

This guy here has apparently burnt his entire house down after a 3s Lipo exploded during charging:

    Lipo Fire - HeliFreak

    -pretty shocking!

it does happen, however it is normally due to a fault with the charger or a damaged pack. this is why you should always charge the packs on a non flamable surface and never leave them charging unattended

its basically a small fireproof sack that contains the fire if a lipo did fail and catch fire.

That's a very sobering story - thanks for posting. Whilst I always monitor my batteries whilst they are being charged I must confess that, when charged, I just put them into my flight box.

How do you guys store your charged batteries in between trips to the field?

That's 2 total loss house fires probably caused by Lipo's in the USA since Christmas.

The other one was in Florida, but they are not 100% certain it was a Lipo in that one.

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?

I can't play the video yet, as connected to my work's vpn, but I'm sure it's a good reminder to us all. Luckily / or not, if this was to happened to me, it would just be my shed, and some models down the end of the garden.

Well it's pretty much a clip of a US news show with footage of the guys house completely ablaze.

I was just reading about the 'Liposack' and it is made of fibreglass but the person that makes them says there is also something particular about the way it's made. But the bottom line is, it is intended to withstand something like 760 degrees F but it will burn eventually.

I'm wondering if that sack is any advantage over just keeping them in a metal container, which will withstand much higher temps.

Either way I reckon Ill be getting one.
I would imagine you wouldn't want to have a totally sealed metal container as this would be like having a shell case enclosing a potentially explosive material

Perhaps a lipo sack placed inside an open metal container.

I store my lipos in a biscuit tin when not in use...thinking I might use my welding skills and upgrade to a 3mm steel plate box...but I can see a lipo sack appearing on the horizon very soon

I think the idea of the lipo sack is that it has a vent so no pressure builds up but it will still contain most of the actual heat/flames.
