  • Double Maiden Flight.

Well, after work, the weather and other random stuff has kept me from my first flight with something bigger than an mSR, and my Concept Copters 450s maiden flight today finally everything clicked.

Until it started raining as I walked out of the house!

Never mind, I went for it anyway. First flight was rather short, rather overcorrected and as it was going backwards towards some railings I reverted to mSR mode and slammed the throttle shut. This resulted in a nice boomstrike.

    • Dent in the boom, no problem though, not very deep.
    • one of the boom supports popped off
    • One wooden blade a bit minced at the end and then taped up because I really, really wanted to have another go.

This resulted in a massively out of balance and track rotor disk, and although it is not really clear in the vid I also has to have the heli tilted over to the right just to hover, possibly to do with the missing boom support? Anyway, a longer flight and I now have a grin like a cheshire cat.

I know the video's are complete rubbish compared with what you lot can do, but for my first go, I am really chuffed

Do you know how much negative pitch you have set up ??. Might be worth reducing it a bit until you gain some confidence not to slam the throttle shut. Looked to be going well on the second vid.

When you get your new blades, I'd check the tracking. It is hard to tell from the first video, but the blades looked out of track which will give you vibs on the heli.

The little 450's are not the easiest things in the world to hover. Well done chap, you must be well chuffed.
      Cheers,
      Simon

        Cheers

I have it set to -2° negative pitch, set that way because I had a feeling my Phoenix training would lose out in real life and I would slam the throttle shut. Going backwards at the time I think just made it tilt enough with the negative pitch as well to boomstrike.

The blades were out of track on the first go, I read the best way to track was to hover the Heli at head hight and then make adjustments. Never got that far before breaking the tip of one of the blades anyway. Second flight they are way out but the sellotape on the blade tip won't be helping.

I have some new blades here already, I bought those woodies because I just knew I would end up dinging them anyway

        Still grinning though

You can get someone to sight the blades without leaving the ground. Be careful if you are doing it yourself, but just as it's getting light on the skids, you should be able to spot the blade which is out of track.

Get a decent pitch gauge and get 0 at mid, no tracking by eye anymore

                      Cheers all.

I am quite pleased, 'Second Attempt' went much better than I thought my first hover attempt would. (If that makes sense, it was the same battery so the same 'flight', right?)

Just managed to get out and have my second flight

Much more stable than the vid of the first, I even managed to deliberately fly slowly forward and then back the heli up towards me again.

Landed nice and softly as well and although the training gear was on, this particular flight did not need it.

I see quite a few guys on the newbie forum saying how they are practising on Phoenix and are trying to get better before flying for real, I can see where you are practising 3d that would be good, but for a hover I cannot recommend just getting out there and doing it enough

Just need a few more batteries now!
