  • Woohoo i can Auto my 450

On my way home from work today i went flying with my 450 in the wind & then decided to have another bash at auto's after not trying for near on 1.5yrs. Up i went nice & high turned the heli & just went for it. I was so supprised & amazed & how suprizingly easy they were. I was doing them into the wind & i was getting up so much headspeed at the bottom it was almost like hitting hold when hovering the Logo. I'm on such a high right now & can't wait to start doing them on the Logo. I don't know how many i done but at a guess i'd say around 7 or 10 after another. They are much easier to do for real than on the sim aswell.

Go on people, use the wind to your advantage & learn to Auto

    At last Paddy
I tried inverted one the weekend But it went wrong fast
Also did a few blade stop ones
One stopped and wasn't starting so took the hold off and it span up no problems
    well happy
    keep pushing
    Cheers Paul

Thanks paul, they're not as good as yours yet though as all my landings were about 20-40ft away in front of me BUT i can land safely which is what matters. They are well addictive aswell. How did you find them on your 600 for the 1st time after doing them on your 450?? That is assuming you learnt them on your 450.

Your balls must be hurting from being so big inverted auto's & blade stops

How much negative pitch are you using in the descent?

My few attempts to auto the 450 have been rather abrupt landings, not enough to do any damage but certainly not smooth.

Would -2 and +10 but ok for auto's, obviously im a million miles away from doing anything like that but just wondering .

I did do them on 450 first then found the 600 easier so not so much on the 450 plus with all the cold weather I don't fly the 450 as I don't like using my lipo's in the cold
Plus the 450 is still in a half night mode ready for night flying
don't done any night auto's I will not be unless some thing wrong.

I started auto's by being in normal mode not idle up and doing fast landings from up high but with the help of the power just in case
then do them with the hold
I did have a small problem with taking the hold off on the 450 with a low headspeed and the slow start kicked in
It bounced and broke the boom suport
took it of and flew again
            have fun
            Cheers Paul

My pitch is i think +-12 deg or it could be 11?? i can't remember without checking. As for how much neg i gave, i'm not entirely sure but i know you can use all of it. I think i increased the pitch part way down & when i done that there was a distinctive sound from the blades (very nice too) as the hs really built up.

              No -2 aint enough

I read that is how you should learn them but as i'd already learnt low height auto's & always hit hold for a floating landing i just thought 'ah what the heck, if it breaks i know not to try again'

                    Paddy, very well done!

I've only tried them on the sim - crashed every time - no big surprise there!

Another tick in the box mate - look forward to seeing it in real life at your field soon

                    Cheers,

As I understand it, in a perfect mechanical world, you can have too much negative pitch for autos. I think I read somewhere ages ago that about -5 to -6 degrees is the optimum pitch range for a 'right way up' auto decent. Also, and extra 2 degrees at the top end will help to really slow the blades right down and bleed off a bit more energy just before you put it on the ground.

I generally fly -10 to +10 in idle up 2, and have -6 to +12 in throttle hold, so when I flick the hold switch to auto (and have been practicing a bit lately), I pull the collective stick right down to the bottom (-6) for the decent and do nearly all of the control on the cyclic only, just using the collective right at the last minute to set the heli down.

impressive p4ddy!! Watching Geek's auto at Beaulieu last year was very impressive and I often think about having a crack after seeing him do it.

I think on my futaba tx if I hit throttle hold in idle up it will also go back to normal pitch curve (i think need to check) so I would need to make sure pitch curve is same for normal as idle up. at the moment it aint lol.

I've found them difficult on the sim with the heli being picky on how much neggy you use (trex 450 model). What you say about it being easier for real, is good to know.

cheers award yourself a p4ddy silver heli for your achievement
