      Another vote for malwarebytes.

As for the Mac V PC debate...
Just get whatever suits your needs best.

I use AVG very happy with it, but i also use Spybot-Search & Destroy great program, does not update auto, but has a button you click to check for updates and you alse after updating have to go in to immunize and get that running with the updates (that sets your web browsers up so its not as easy to pick up crap from surfing the web.

My sister had one like this, we ended up having to format. Reason being is that it installed itself on the Network drivers (or replaced them). After removal, it would be good until you tried to use the Internet/Network via any means.
It somewhere buried a source file and unpacked it every time we had to access the Internet, which put us right back where we were.
As my sister needed the PC and we were severely time pressed, a backup and format was the only sure way to fix it.
I use mainly Linux...doesn't mean I believe that everybody else should too :-)

Both of these programs are the only programs you need.

                I run Avast and zonealarm.
                I also run ccleaner regularly.

however I have also had this popup fake ativirus thing.

I installed and ran malwarebytes and that got rid of it.
So +1 for malwarebytes from me.

                I'm downloading Spybot-Search & Destroy now!
