  • Flying on the Dark Side

As a reward for getting good end of term exam results I bought my 13 yo a R/C plane. He had wanted one of those electric polystrene things, but as I have plenty of spare aeroplane kit around I splashed out and got him an RTF balsa plane and a Spectrum DX6i

Had its first flight Sunday, and wow, this is easy...I haven't flown planes since, well, er since the JR X3810 came out (I bought the best I could afford at the time and then its been in the loft because the club lost its field shortly after)...but you don't forget how to fly. The motor died shortly into the first flight, and I just flipped it around and brought it in for a landing. Quick fiddle with the carb and off again and got some good flying in. Even let my son have a go of his toy :-)

Quite a contrast with flying a heli - it goes where you point it and in the direction you expect :-)

Also got a couple of whizzes of the 450 in as well.

After a couple of flights you will soon realise why you fly helis.

Yeah, I done planes long ago and basically lost interest. In some ways this was too easy - even when my son lost orientation and got it going in an interesting direction, it was pretty simple to sort it out.

The heli's are certainly alot more challenging.

heli's are more fun and harder to fly but planes are also nice and relaxing i have both although more helis i think and i'm currently restoring a spitfire and building a messerschmitt bf110 as i like warbirds

I fly both, the planes are definately more relaxing, but usually I will only have 1 maybe 2 flights of a plane in a day and ive had enough, but helis I could just go on and on.
                All the best

I switch between helis and planes more often then women switch moods.

I simply can't say which I prefer, I like them both and they're both bloody expensive!

I enjoy heli's but my love is with planks, but i do enjoy both as they are very different disciplines!! Flying hard 3d with planks makes it less boring!!

there is something about flying a well executed and smooth aerobatic routine that i really enjoy

There is nothing wrong in flying heli or fixedwing - both have their places in this broad church (sounds like a priest).

I find heli you can fly in a small field even on your back garden but fixed wing needs much larger fields or slopes. And you can fly a planes miles away from you but I dare not fly a heli more than 200 metre away from me.

Both are relaxing hobby once you become a proactive flyer and not a reactive flyer.

                              Cheers
