  • Pointless FBL Question.

    I've been following the FBL threads (and videos) with interest but it's led me to wonder what would happen if you fitted the FBL electrics to a model with a flybar?

    Would it just make it ultra stable or overdrive everything till it hit the floor?

    I guess that would depend on what gains you were using on the roll/pitch axis. I would expect that it would still fly, I would also expect the electronic damping to be faster than the mechanical although I could be wrong with this - guess it depends on how stiff the feathering spindle dampers are and how heavy the paddles are.

    No doubt someone will try it eventually... certainly this would be how I would go about developing a product in the early stages.

      there is a chance that it would go berserk, because the mechanical flybar causes a delay.
      That is, by the time the correction movement arrives at the blades, the controller has already changed its mind.

      If I were to try, I'd start with a very low gain and at a safe distance :-)

        apparantly the upcoming Curtis fbl system can be programmed for use with a flybar. interesting decision to include that ability i think.

          yes, it might make sense - use a shorter, light flybar for cyclic and short-term stability, and the controller to prevent pitching up and drifting.

          Sooner or later we might see a flybarless controller with a RPM sensor for the head, that adapts its nick / roll rates during autorotation to the headspeed, like a conventional flybar does.

            The Gyrobot900 offers this option too, I know this cos I owned 3 of them.

                I once tried a Gaui GU-365 on a flybarred TRex 450 just out of curiosity. I only did a couple of flights on it and I'd say it just felt more stable and possibly a bit like it had heading hold on the cyclic (i.e. if you tilted the heli it would tend to stay tilted more so than normally). I didn't fly it enough to draw many more conclusions but certainly it didn't do anything really bad or strange.

                  I beleive that is to mean that the flight control system can be deactivated if you want to run the Total-G, but you are not sure if you want to go flybarless.
                  The Total-G can utilize the internal ATG to govern electric by installing a magnet in a constant driven tail gear. (the flat grear under the main gear) You then use the same sensor that the ATG uses in a nitro machine to sense the magnet. You then set the ATG into gear ratio 10 (1 to 1) and the governor acts the same as it would in a nitro machine. The ATG V3 actually is capable of doing the same thing, we just done advertise it.
