  • Safe Way to track blades??

    Hi all..

2nd post of my new hobby...

I sold the stock titan woodies and brought a set of 325 Radix's but I feel that these are a way to nice to ruin on my first flight! I then brought some cheap 325 Carbon blades from Ebay - HK (Which I think are the ones that Andy uses on this site) I would have went for Align 325 Pro's but was swayed away as I miss read on another post that the "extra weights" were cracking off causing injury.. but didnt know this didnt apply to the woodies and that was a while ago (so might get some off those aswell now)

Back to the post.. Now, Im very nervous about spooling up the titan and looking at the plane of the blades to check the tracking, with the heli at arms length from my face!! This is only because I've read about blade failures etc etc and I value keeping my face intact and staying alive! Bit over causious maybe but is there another safer way to track blades without staring at the tips at arms length??

Ps. I just want to say thats im spending loads of money on upgrades and I havnt even taken the MT for its first flight yet but I still love it!!

    Thank you!

Very dangerous mate and not something i recommend any one else does TBH... why not just put the heli on the ground and do the same thing. I mean i know you may get a bit dirt on your knees but surely this is better than loosing an eye
Exact same principle but best way is to get a friend to help you, ie he watches the blades and you man the Transmitter You dont have to be close to the model to see whats going on. Just make sure the blades are clearly marked up with tracking tape and you wont miss it.
Of course before all this you need to check both blades when you set your pitch.

Why not lift off come up to head height looking at the blades or better still concentrate on hovering and ask someone else to check it. Mark one of the blade grips with a scratched cross on it and adjust only that one. One turn one way. Hover again and see what difference it made, if better keep going that way, if worse then go 2 turns the opposite way. Your in MK so if your still having trouble pm me and I'll give you a hand, better still if your into it join the club at the bottom of my sig and we'll get you sorted. Where in MK are you?

        As above for me.

I check the tracking when spooled up on the ground and then again once I'm hovering in front of me. At the end of the day you want to get the tracking right under flight conditions as that's where they will spend most of their time.

Agree... a visual in flight would be the next thing (which youd naturally do anyways) to do after you have them tracked on the ground. In most cases especially if you have descent blades then you wont have to adjust again. Will be down to what you have you throttle curves set to though etc etc

get some tape on the blades stay well away!!! get someone else to look as you put all your concentration on hovering the thing.
this is what happens when you panic and it goes wrong. blade 400 did this with 80% throttle I thought i was gonna die felt like my stomach was hanging out. took about half a second to travel 6ft backwards into my waist.

hope you think twice about holding heli and spooling up.

              Mmm,

Does get me when people call heli's TOY'S..

More like a leathal weapon in the wrong hands. If your skills dont allow you to maintain a steady constant hover then go to your local club as earlier suggested and ask a seasoned pilot to hover it for you while you watch the blades. In the long run it could save pain and money.

I think you need to get to your local club and get someone to check it over for you, especially has you have not flown it yet.

                Good luck Del.

Guys.. thank you for your responses.. ill try hovering but I think I need to get my swashplate level first, as even though it was a factory built 2.4G Titan.. the swashpalte seems out.. I've checked the link lengths and adjusted the servo trim but it just dont look right!.. I keep thinking it'll veer off on lift off!

Click on the MK HELI CLUB bit. It should be a different colour. Emerson valley just round the corner. If your having bother let me know, shouldn't take too long to sort it out. If your not happy to hover it let someone who is, it's hard to hover and look at the blade. I wouldn't put tape on 325's it's hard to see and it adds weight to the blades not helping with tracking.

correct me if im wrong but is it not better to get a blade balencer, then check wether they are tracking properly. i will be coming up to the same situation soon as im replacing the dampers on my raptor head, i thought i would get glass fiber blades at the same time, im lucky that there is people at my club that will advise me but am i doing the right thing?

It doesn't hurt to static balance blades. A lot of the more expensive blades DO balance fine out of the box, but as I say, better to be sure.

                              Ouch!!!!!!!!

You can static test them; I loaded them with some "down" in STUNT. But better under load in the hover.
