  • Trex450 or Mini Titan

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get a bit of input and advice from you guys. I am returning to heli's after a 2 year break (in which time I have been flying planks). I used to fly a Honey Bee FP and recently bought a Blade mCX.

I have a couple of questions about my next heli:

I am torn between the Trex 450 Sport Combo and the Mini Titan, they seem to cost about the same. given I will most likely have to learn to hover again I am unsure what is best. This is how I see them:

Trex 450 - Major brand and proven, all metal head and tail, comes complete with good quality Gyro and servos, loads of support and info online.

Mini Titan - Major brand but not as tried and tested as the Trex, plastic head, and I would put the same gear in it as the Trex uses, Gyros seems to be in a precarious position just waiting to be destroyed in a crash!.

Is a metal head a good idea when learning to hover? very expensive to fix.
Which one is more stable and cheaper to fix when crashed (notice I say WHEN not IF)

I will be learning on my own at least for the near future. From the posts I've seen, my local club Hayling Heli's is over subscribed. But I am yet to contact them to confirm this. Hopfuly they might entertain helping a non member with setting up the first time?

    Thanks

    Chris

I have just sold my mini titan with the plastic head, wobbling centre hub is a nightmare, and if you upgrade the head which you will eventually, which cost me £45 and that wasn't the whole head, so go for a trex, the sport, I have

450 pro or sport in this day and age but the Mini Titan SE is still a fantastic little model. If you did go fro the Mini Titan then make sure its the Metal SE version unless you plan on upgrading the head straight away.
One thing i will say is the Mini Titan is a far easier more predictable helicopter to fly. Just like its big brothers the raptors.
Again though in this day and age owning a 450 is probably the better option if not only for the spares availability/price and bang for buck performance.

This is a valid and very rare question owing to the huge weight of opinion in favour of Align 450 TRex.

I took an exact same stance about two years ago when at the same stage and learning and arrived at a contrasting conclusion from all my other club mates. At the time I owned a TRex 450 and found that the slightest knock bump mishap or hard landing would result in downtime and an internet session buying new parts at great expense. It was at this time that my local hobby shop was displaying a Mini Titan and it was obvious that the build quality and robust materials gave it a superior position over the delicate TRex especially for a learning phase.
I have never looked back and although I continue to own many Align products the Mini Titan is a great model and easily earns its place as a credible 450 machine capable of being both a bullet proof learner but also a nimble 3D machine.

Align is a fantastic model, don't get me wrong but is worth remembering it is designed by - and for - aerobatic 3D pilots, so there is also life alongside Trex 450!

I've got both 450pro & Mini-T 325se the pro is much more locked-in when hovering than the M-T, the M-T 'se' only is good as its very powerful enough to handle a good bit of stick banging" but for soft 3D then its the pro.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions from everyone. I decided to go for the Mini Titan in the end. One of the main reasons is because I found a supplier who is selling them HALF price, including spares and upgrades!!

This is what I have bought to get me started:

Mini Titan ARF with motor and ESC
                      Alu upgrade for rotor head
                      Spare set of blades
                      Spare fly bars
                      Spare feathering shafts
                      Spare Harded main shaft
                      This lot was £150.00

3 x HS 55's, apparently they drop right in (not the best servo in the world i no)
GP750 with DS420 Gyro for the tail

                      Electronics £140

Total £290 not bad price I dont think.

I will fly with Dx6i I already have.

Thanks again, you're a real helpful bunch on here.
