  • piro consistancy?

Just so when im at the field and people start talking about how good the 92777222633355522252 servo's are and how they need or dont need a cyclock or carbsmart or governor and my dads heli is better than your dads heli and all that banter but when they say yeah but my gyro has a better piro consitency than your dads gyro I can be even cleverererer and say more than YEAH ME TOO.

So could someone or multiple people tell me in layman terms followed if necessary by a detailed explanation of what this is and how to see it because all I see is the heli spinning round in a truly spectacular manner (in the right hands of course).

many thanks in advance in this matter for lowering my learning curve.

    My own explanation.

When the heli is at an acute angle ie tail down inverted, tail slide, piro flip etc the heli will still pirouette at the same speed either left or right even if the head is at full positive or negative pitch. It won't slow down or speed up or stop piroetting all together. Its just consistent. Some Gyros perform better than others..

The piro variation between clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations is due to the torque from the rotation of the main blades, so there will always be an inconsistency. This can be adjusted to give the same piro rate in both directions either by adjustment in the gyro setting or by adjusting the end points for the rudder.
      I hope this helps ?

What it means is that the piro rate will remain the same under more conditions then a gyro with worse consistency.

An example is in FFF that the piro rate will be the same when the tail is going towards the flight direction than back away from it, a very hard thing for the tail system to do.

Spartan's and V-Bars are very consistent.

Means that the piro is the same speed round the full 360* rotation regardless of pitch or other factors like wind.

As the others have said a consistent piro rate is simply a tail that doesn't speed up or down if you keep the same level of rudder input. The biggest challenge for a gyro is to maintain the same speed while the heli is moving or in strong wind.

The most important question however is WHY is this important? There are two main reasons:

1 A tail with poor consistency, often referred to as "wippy" does not look very pretty. It can give the impression that pilot has little control of the tail and in competition Judges won't like to see this.

2 However the biggest issue is that a consistent tail (non wippy) will make moving piro manouvres like piro wall of death, piro loops, to a certain extent chaos loops and piro metranomes easier to learn. In fact anything where you move the tail side-on to the wind is is more predictable with a non wippy tail.

Good piro consistency will provide you with confidence and therefore speed up your learning process!

Like Richie has said ... the tail keeps the same rate of spin in strong wind, moving ... I went from a 401 to a 720 .... after having flown and got used to my 720 flew my night machine with a 401 in it and boy you can tell the difference between the 2 .. I had to up the end points on the 401 and play with settings to get it n e where near how well the 720 feels ... TBH it will never perform as good as a 720 on stops and piro consistency...Which is why my night flyer will be getting the 720 treatment as well

I've flown most gyros now and Mike is right. The best in terms of pyro consistency is the CSM 720.

I swapped over to a CSM on my comp 700 before 3D championships and it gave me the confidence to fly Walls of Death much lower than I had before. I've replaced all my Spartans with CSM 720s now and very happy and no I'm not sponsored by them to say that
