  • Running in a new engine

My new OS 55 hyper arrived today, hoping to get it fitted tonight. Im the first to admit I know very little about tuning engines, so Im looking at tips for running the engine in.

I know I should disable the govenor. Im not sure about throttle curves on a dx7, should I make it lienar or does it matter.

Any hints/tips or websites I should read would be helpful

    Many thanks

Keep it slightly rich, but not slobbering! Let it rev - don't let it load up. For the first few runs, fly it in short bursts with time to cool down between bursts. After a couple of tanks you should be able to extend the bursts into longer periods, but don't let it labour or get too hot!

have you looked at the manual?
The OS .50 manual (don't know about the .55) clearly states that it doesn't need any sophisticated break-in procedure. Just run a bit on the rich side.
There are lots of myths on the internet from days past, when CNC tools weren't available and the manufacturing process for parts was much less accurate than it is now.

Without the governor you will be able to hear that as the engine loosens up the rev range of the engine changes. Also as the engine loosens up the mixture will appear to be richer than is needed. With the governor engaged all of this is masked.

We found it really hard getting my 55 tuned, I'm almost at the stage where I just pull it out and stick the 50 back in. The general view is that its probably due to the weather being so cold, it started off ok and I ran 3 rich tanks thru it but after that trying to tune any sort of usable power out of it was impossible so it may be worth waiting til it warms up a bit.

If you have had it excessively rich then you probably haven't set the ring yet. Just go in one or two clicks hover for a bit, do a few gentle climb outs and see if the engine is getting warm. If not go in another 1 or 2 clicks until you can feel the back plate getting warm. Now fly and after a while the back plate will go cold. Now you can go in another couple of clicks to get the engine warm again. By repeating this you will reach the point hopefully where the engine will maintain its temperature. At that point you will be able to tune for power and get more heat into the engine.

The biggest problem we had was that our hands were so cold we couldnt acuratly guage the backplate temps. I tried to run it up again last Sunday and it wouldnt even start, I pulled off the carb & cleaned it out and stuck a new plug in but it still wouldnt fire up. By that time it was dark and freezing cold so I gave up again. So I'm going to wait til the weather warms up a bit before having another go.

Send your heli to me Gate, I'll change the engine over to your 50 and give you a spare 50 to go with it and I'll keep the 55, deal?

Its a tempting offer Davey but I'm prepared to spend one more day trying to get it running, I might even try it with my 50 carb. But so far I'm not impressed, I've spent more time on my knees fiddling with little knobs than a £5 rent boy!

Ok? Back on topic then! I'm no expert but I left my governor on but set it to 1700 rpm and just hovered around for 3 or 4 tanks with both mid & high needles at 2 turns and a couple of degrees off centre (rich) for the idle screw.

Mind you its 10 days later and now it wont start so take my advice with a pinch of salt!
