  • zero pitch point

Does anyone else think it would be useful to have a single ratchet notch in the collective stick at mid point (zero pitch) when flying aerobatics - so you can feel where the zero pitch point is?

Ive thought about his in the past but you never really use 0degrees as most of the time you transition though it ir be near it for instance in a roll you just go though 0 but in a death spiral you want to be a 0 for the roll hower you have no control over the wind pushing the heli if you stick to 0

It would have to have an adjustable position.

If you fly a 3D 'V' curve, it's in the middle of the stick range, but if you fly an idle-up curve of say -6 degrees to +10 (like I do!), then the zero point is somewhere in the bottom half of the stick range and it would still be useful to know where it is.

I'd thought that any serious aerobatic pilot would have the zero degrees at mid stick...
what set me thinking is practising autos on the sim I can't tell where zero is very easily and in reality you wouldn't hear the revs of the rotor to know if they are speeding up or slowing down (other engines running nearby probably). So pilots must actually have a very good feel for where the zero degree point is, even if they are not ever staying at mid stick. I don't yet have this feel, but I don't seem to have a problem with power on where you can see the effect the pitch is having by the movement of the model.

I need a way to stop thinking about this stuff when I should be working!

          Hi Gordon

It's all just down to stick time I'm afraid, no short cuts:-(

Exactly the same reason I would bomb out a lot more times than you would.

          Cheers

not really bob, the main reason is you are doing 8:1 at 15mph, and I'm doing 15:1 at 40mph.

Don't get me started on that one bob, the other Moyesboys just did 234km with a 30 degree dog leg, average speed 68.04km/hr and arrived with 55 seconds separating the first 5!
Easy when the sky looks like this though:

Launch looks a bit shallow and its not a big top to bottom...

              Hi

Trust me I would still bomb out more often, if not you would start wondering what all that practise was for:-)

Presume the boys are all out in OZ then?

              Cheers

You could always avoid the bomb out with your lawnmower thingy Bob!

There is only one Brit Lawn Dart in Oz. Its rather overshadowed by one of the austrians detaching from his glider AND his parachute. Its amazing but there are still people putting their harnesses together wrong.
I went to Oz for the whole of January 6 times in 10 years. Now I have a family I don't want to do that anymore (us all going would cost too much!).
If you want to make a big jump in flying ability then go somewhere south and fly in Jan/Feb then you have a big advantage on the other guys come spring. Oz is good but Brazil is just as good, as is Mexico. There are other distractions in Brazil though. Particuarly in Valadares which is a popular place. I took 'er indoors along so I could stay focused on the flying.

I had most fun last year on a flight in the UK.

But I don't wear the "Lawnmower thingy" when I am trying to go XC:-)

OZ report says he was still in his harness so was the reserve just routed wrongly?
1000m is a long way to fall, enough time to get depressed about things on the way down I would think.

Do any radios have a programmable beep??
ie so that you could program it to make a beep as you pass a preset point on your pitch curve...this would be totally user programmable on each of your curves.
Could help with your auto issue if you cant do it by feel yet.

No they dont, not even the Microsoft 14mz i think

Its all down to stick time, you just get used to the feel of the sticks..

All my flight modes and hold pitch curves are identical with zero midstick

Heli flying is about good hand/eye coordination,we constantly make small corrections to all of the controls, pitch is just one of them

I understand your reasons for asking but i dont really see the point

just to add,the Microsoft 14mz will speak to you and play music and has a nice colour screen,,
but to have a function that may actually relate to flying..dont be silly

How long does 57k take in one of those?
I did a very slow 102k in a glider in kent 3hr 3 mins but in my defence, it was early in my career and I had a phobia about landing in a field and getting shot at by an irate farmer!!
