Are loops okay with woodies?

Okay lads.

Third consecutive day out with the Swift & I'm loving it
Its my first run of flying in ages due to work commitments, weather etc.

Its also my first proper test of the 401 gyro, TT Green paddles & 3152 servos I fitted last week.
I'm totally impressed & its a different heli. Well mannered, stable yet responsive & fast & I'm just loving it. Last time I flew I was just aboout coming to terms with figure eights

Found myself hovering in all orientations without any problems at all, was also doing fast circuits, figure eights, stall turns and generally throwing it around comfortably.

Anyway...enough of that and to the point
Can I loop with wooden blades? I felt confident enough to do it but I held back due to the blades being stock 515mm items & I didnt wanna leave a smokin hole in the ground

well both myself and wang_uk on here have been performing basic aerobatics on woods on our raptors without problems. i have just bought a set or carbons for the titan though, and have used carbons on the 30. it made a massive difference to the crispness of manouvers, and climbouts seemed to be quicker too. technically your not meant to, but as long as your not throwing it around too much im sure it would be ok...

Basic aerobatics and a bit more are fine,,just remember to ensure you keep the headspeed down to what the blade maker recommends


I used woods all the time and was doing loops,rolls,inverted circuits and hovering,stall turns,gentle flips etc

Found the Thunder Tiger woods to be quite strong as well,sure there were sometimes balancing issues but they did the job quite nicely

Moved to carbons now though,mainly because they do perform better all round,you can run a higher headspeed safetly and they come well matched..

Not a bad price now either

yeah used to do basic 3d with a rappy 30 v1 on woodies wouldn't recomend it though... i was a student and couldn't afford carbons

Well it took quite a bit of tape just to get them balanced so theres probably a slight drag issue there.

I was just concerned about them A: Snapping B: Forward speed bleeding off when going over...Easily recovered though I suppose with height

Isnt it amazing how quickly the confidence comes once figure eights have been nailed??!!

Dont worry to much,they are a lot stronger than you think

there is a lot of peer pressure to use carbon blades which is no bad thing but the woodies will be fine

The main issue with them is to ensure the roots are properly glued on and that none of the plastic covering is peeling off as this can reduce the lift..

My woods always seemed to survive a boomstrike better than some of the cheaper carbons as well

just want to stress the headspeed thing.

if you it go too high you will break the blades and that always ends in a big mess as your left with a very out of balance rotor system.

most will say 30 size stuff is normally 1700rpm

the problem with such a low speed is the heli isnt as responsive as it could be so when it goes wrong your going to have less time to get it straight. That and the balancing issue is the main reason people go carbons. You can get some that are better than woodies for not a lot more expense that will take much higher headspeed.

I currently have 1800rpm set to high governor so I'll reduce it a little

swift woodies might be a bit higher than 1700 as they are smaller, check with century.
