  • Power Switch

    Hi all,

Was just wondering how many use power switches on their helis in addition to the switch on either the 2 in 1 or Fromeco/duralite/etc type switches.

And if you do, is there any benefit or is it just another electrical connection point where a potential failure could happen..

    Cheers,

Hi Mo, the Duralite/Fromeco use a fail safe switch system whereby the switch activates the Regulator when the circuit is broken. If a failure occurs these regs stay in the on position.

This requires you to alter the internal wiring of a normal switch. Hence fromeco offer the Pin Flag switch system etc.

Not sure if the Align 2 in 1 is a failsafe design.

I myself have been using the Align 6amp BEC for 2 years now on my machines. I replace the poor quality wires that come on it replacing the single RX feed with two leads/plugs to the RX. The reg to battery are replaced with quality Silicone wiring and a deans. I also remove a small amount of the rear heatsink (a flat alloy plate) to prevent the plate shoring against the wiring where it connects to the circuit board as my cabling is a little heavier. Again I'm uncertain if the Micro switch is failsafe on the BEC.

I am sure I have read that the Align 2in1 switch is not a fail safe one, dont have a unit to confirm this though.
I use a Flighttech 8A unit and it has a failsafe switch that you can optionally connect to the regulator. It uses 2 x Futaba sockets for the battery connection, as such I have modified my Li-Po packs by fitting a pair of Futaba plugs on silicone wire.

I've used a switch on eone of mine, but not the other Mo, but on my helis the reg only powers the servos and not the Rx. The switch is to switch of the Rx which is running direct off the 2 cell lipo.
The heli without the switch has the battery connected direct to the Rx with no switch.

In answer to your question - don't bother with the switch - just unplug the battery.
There is a tiny current drain from the 2 in 1 when the unit is switched off. So disconnect the lipo when the heli is on the shelf.
