I would guess that you just turn it on!

Can't see that there could really be much more to it.

Doesn't teach your thumbs to avoid the corners though, just stops the servos going to far at those points.

Why should your cyclics bind up? When you set up your throws, and endpoints, do you not check that your not binding at full throws?

Yep, but if you push the sticks into the corners and check for binding at top and bottom of travel you will definitely see binding on some heli’s, unless you reduce the travel so much that you end up with some pretty lame endpoints.

A swash ring helps prevent this, although some might argue that the stick will never be in the corners during normal flight.

I fitted one to my TX when I first started out, and still use it for piece of mind, at the end of the day is purely down to personal preference.

I pondered a physical ring for my old 9C but never actually got around to ordering/fitting one. I had spent some time rotating the head with throws at extremes though to try to ensure there was no possibility of binding.

Since replacing the 9C with a 10CG I also have the swashring function which is a % value, think mine is about 75 and it does the job nicely I turned it on because I have the function so why not use it... similarly I have many other functions (dating back to the 9C config) that are configured because I can - I do like to get the most out of my Tx. I find I learn all there is to know about them this way, helps when it comes to tinkering at the field or when helping others.

nice explanation steve might give one a go on the dx 9 see if it sorts the vague feeling it's giving me. Can up o travels so it's doing far more about the centre without fear of ripping something off the heli if i give it too much cyclic.

Well the ring has arrived so we'll see how I get on with it and if it makes any difference at all.

To get around the 'on and off' issue when switching between helis and planes, I've stuck two tiny magnets into the gimbal surround and another two into the back of the cyclic ring, just like you'd fit governor magnets into a fan. The magnets are 2mm dia by 1mm thick, so pretty titchy. I've organised the poles of the magnets so that it doesn't matter which way round the ring goes on - i.e. can be rotated by 180 degrees and it doesn't matter.
