  • Tips for Forward Flying(What a great Morning)

    Hi all,

I definatly feel this hobbys going in the right direction for me at last, ive been out first thing this morning and finally achieved 4 x 4min forward flying with my 450 intill my new batterys arrive, after all the trouble ive had shes flying superbly now i even went for it with the wind about im a very happy chap and thanks for all thats helped with this amazing journey so far

Anyway theres 2 little problems first anyone no how to slow adrenaline down my heart dont half pound while flying lol, the other problem that am finding while practicing left and right twisting round and coming towards me etc there are certain angles i loose the orientation of the heli, im wondering if its the colour of the canopy (grey) thats not heping any help would be appriciated..

    Cheers

    Nice one

Yellow canopys are just the best for orientation in all sky colours....get yourself the yellow one with the black lightening....brilliant for learning

        1. - no idea, but would you want to !! If I don't get at least one leg shake a flight, I feel I am missing out !

2 - canopy might help a bit, but to be honest I think this is just part of learning, main thing is not to panic, and just hold controls where they are, normally heli in forward flight will hold a turn and you will quickly 'get' orientation back. One of the things which I found really helped me was flying slow small square circuits in front of me, hovering about 15ft legs, and in both directions.

Ok point taken jamesb72 thinking back now i have done some turns quite slow giving time to panic etc will do what you both say it all does seem to make sence.

          Thanks alot

Certainly will! I still get the shakes after an exciting/eventful flight! Most flyers tend to wear Khaki coloured trouser for obvious reasons.

For orientation I find a plain white canopy with a black windscreen is pretty good. A scuplted canopy (like the one on a Raptor) can work really well if the light is at all directional as the contours of the canopy show up as differing shades which is exactly what doesn't happen when you have a grey canopy. The bright white helps to clearly identify whether the model is flying towards you or away.

That said, I've never tried a yellow one.

I used a bright orange dayglow sola film strip (1X4 inch) on the canopy. You could not miss that colour and it helped me a lot.

                  Any model shop sells them.

Hmm, grey is the colour of our sky's 99% of the time so probably not the best idea. Yellow, as others have said is great for spotting orientation but mainly it's just practice and keeping your cool when you lose orientation. Still happens to me once in a while but usually manage to suss it.

My 450 canopy is neon orange, with a black "windshield". The latter is important because it tells the angle.
I also got the slightly larger Outrage 450 canopy for my HDX-Rex.

It's hard enough to keep the eyes on such a small heli, when flying in front of a "difficult" background (in my field: houses).
If needed, get two canopies - one for style, one for visibility :-)

                              Hi all,

Thought i would update its been a while the yellow canopy has done the trick for me i seem to see it alot better thanks alot

I got 2 new questions for you please.

After venturing out on and off the passed few weeks seems thing to be getting better with the FF, like a fool i took out in the gusts of winds yesterday thought sod it lol anyway after a few batterys it beat me and downed the little bird

So first question do you lads bother about the wind and gusts with these helis or am i asking to much? they were pretty strong gusts.

And secondly ive broke the stablilizer bracket What is the function of the horizontal stabilizer/fin on the tail boom and will it hurt not using it and the supporting bars while they come in the post? I replaced all the broken parts but need the stablilizer bracket bits.

                              Thanks in advance
